Is it just me or is fiat land getting even worse? I have had so much trouble processing credit card payments online from multiple merchants. An airline recently refused to accept my payment until I sent them a photo of my passport. I declined. Same thing happened with an online retailer. Wife has had similar experiences.

Today I'll be commemorating Newfoundland Memorial Day instead of Canada Day. It’s the 110th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel in the battle of Somme. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment had roughly 800 men sent to the frontline by British command on July 1,1916. Only 68 made roll call the next day.

Newfoundland went into a fuck ton of debt to help the British during the war, and that debt would later be leveraged against us when the British and Canadian governments conspired to sell us into Canadian confederation.

I’ve been training early in the day. I run to the gym to train Muay Thai from 6am-7am. Out the door by 5:30am. Then work.

By the time the evening rolls around I kinda forget I trained and feel like I’m being a lazy piece of shit.

Then I remember I trained early and proceed to be lazy piece of shit.

On monitoring the situation. Monitor it. Don’t dwell in it.

When you’re driving, you concentrate on what is 10 feet in front of you.

If you hear a bridge is out a few miles down, you adjust route. You don’t ignore the bridge being out, but you also don’t dwell on the bridge being out.

Adjust, then shift perspective back to what’s 10 feet in front of you.

I try harder than the average person to preserve privacy. But then I think about the cameras in the streets, the airports, the malls, the facial scanning etc. and I’m like wtf am I even doing? I live in an inescapable panopticon and I think my faraday fanny pack is effective? 🫠😂

At the gym today, listening to Rage Against the Machine, pretending they didn’t just become part of the machine.

It got me thinking about how our favourite artists generally blew up in their idealistic 20s, when they wanted to fight for something.

Most of them were then offered positions within the machine that was packaged to them as being an activist.

Actually this is kind of a lie. The Freedom Convoy was a beautiful Canadian moment. Not exactly cohesive though since most of the country hated us for it.

The last time I felt any social cohesion in Canada was the last Tragically Hip concert before Gord Downie died. We all gathered in parks, watched the show on big screens, and showed our appreciation for Gord.

Today marks 10 years of sobriety for me. 10, fucking, years. In one sense it feels remarkable, and in another sense, completely mundane.

For 10 consecutive years, each day, I’ve chosen to be more present to my reality. Problems arise, and I choose to face them rather than drink or drug them away.

My reality for so long consisted of waking up to a drink. It was a physical necessity in the latter years of drinking.

To have escaped that hell is something I’m forever grateful for, and I’m grateful for all the helping hands that pulled me up out of that hole.

It’s a day of reflection, and also at the same time, just another day. But another day is quite a gift, innit?
