"Just build stuff, stuff for yourself."
Balas and Gigi take a walk in Madeira.
Balas came to Madeira for the first Sovereign Engineering cohort. He met the woman who is now his wife there, and together they had the first Sovereign Engineering baby. Their walk returns to the early days of Nostr, when a handful of small clients made the promise of an open protocol tangible. Balas began by changing fiatjaf's Branle, then built Alphaama as a client that lets people see more of the protocol's structure.
What should a client show when a conversation branches? Balas and Gigi work through nested threads, relay queries, the context lost in a flat feed, and discovery through the reactions of people you follow. A client built for its maker can explore possibilities that a generic feed might hide. The trade-off is more visible complexity.
Balas also talks about drawing the art for anon & mato, a handmade game that is now playable. They compare that slower, handmade work with coding agents and voice prompts, including Gigi's experience building Feather and shipping through Zapstore.
Now Balas is working on Nostr Apps, a place to launch small, composable Nostr applications. They compare napps with Napplet, discuss NIP-5A nsites and fiatjaf's Verdana, and ask how much a shared runtime should provide. The conversation ends where it began: build something you want to use, share it, and let others discover what they can do with it.
In a later note, fiatjaf wrote that, after making many napps for browsing Nostr, “no one beats the classic alphaama experience.” He points to an Alphaama version in Nostr Apps that he says works after logging in and clicking start.
In this dialogue:
- the first Sovereign Engineering cohort and the first SovEng baby
- learning Nostr through Branle and building Alphaama
- threaded conversations, relay queries, and discovery through your follow list
- the handmade art and game design behind anon & mato
- voice prompts, coding agents, Feather, and Zapstore
- Nostr Apps, napps, Napplet, nsites, and Verdana
- why building for yourself can lead to unexpected collaboration

This is an independent project. If you'd like to help support it, you can make a contribution. But there's no obligation at all. Reading, sharing, and coming back is already a form of support.
