Bitcoin has a thermostat

Last time I said Bitcoin mining is a room full of kids racing to guess a secret number, and that no matter how many kids pile into the room, a winner still turns up roughly every 10 minutes.

A few of you asked how that's possible. Fair question. More kids guessing should mean somebody wins faster. That's how guessing works.

Here's the answer. Bitcoin has a thermostat.

The thermostat

Your thermostat at home has one job. You set it to 70 and it does not care what's happening outside. Too cold, the heat kicks on. Too hot, the AC kicks on. The number on the wall stays 70.

Bitcoin's thermostat is set to 10 minutes.

Every 2,016 blocks, which works out to about two weeks, the network checks its own clock and asks one question: did those blocks take longer or shorter than two weeks?

If they came too fast, too many kids showed up, so the network makes the secret number harder to guess. If they came too slow, kids left the room, so it makes the number easier. That adjustment is called difficulty. It happens automatically. Nobody votes on it and nobody is in charge of it.

The part people get wrong

Most people who've heard of difficulty assume it only climbs. Hash rate goes up, difficulty goes up, forever.

It goes down too, and 2026 has been a great year for watching it happen.

In February, winter storms pulled Texas miners off the grid just as a price slump was squeezing everyone else. Blocks slowed down. Difficulty dropped 11%, the steepest fall since China banned mining in 2021.

In June, Bitcoin's price fell around 15%. Mining stopped paying for a lot of operators, so they shut machines off. Blocks slowed again, taking 16 days to do what should take 14. Difficulty dropped 10% from 139 trillion down to 125 trillion.

Nobody had to do anything. Bad weather and a price crash each took a swing at Bitcoin's schedule, and the schedule fixed itself both times.

Most adjustments are far less dramatic. A typical one moves a percent or two in either direction, which is to say: boring. Boring is the normal state.

Why any of this matters

Bitcoin's entire pitch is that you know how much of it will ever exist and roughly when it shows up. 3.125 new bitcoin per block, a block about every 10 minutes, cut in half every four years until issuance stops.

That promise only holds if blocks actually arrive every 10 minutes.

Without difficulty, a mining boom would speed issuance up and burn through the schedule years early. A mining collapse would slow it to a crawl. The 21 million number would be a rough guess instead of a hard rule.

Difficulty is the thing that turns "about 10 minutes" into something you can count on.

The number I keep coming back to

Right now Bitcoin's average block time is sitting at 10 minutes and 6 seconds.

Six seconds off target. Through a winter storm, a price crash, and hundreds of billions of dollars of hardware switching on and off. No committee, no emergency meeting, no vote.

That's the thermostat doing its job.
