Time for round 4 of this 2025 retrospective. I’m trying to mix up the pictures so it’s a cross section of genres and styles in the hope there’s something for everyone!

Which is your favourite from this set?

1. Meeting overlanders on the road is great not just because it’s fun to meet with like-minded people, but also because it’s great to share location knowledge. This park up was one such recommendation and proved to be an absolute stunner, with incredible views towards China across a dried river valley (see picture 3!) 📍Kyrgyzstan

2. We’d heard about a nomad festival in Bokonbayevo, Kyrgyzstan and managed to get ourselves there on the right day to watch. With archery, horsemanship, taigan dogs and eagle hunting… and all of them at once… it made an incredible day out and seeing people, men and women alike, cantering flat out while shooting bow and arrows from horseback, and hitting their thrown targets (like clay pigeon shooting from horseback with a bow) we were blown away by both the skill and bravery of the nomads.

3. Dried river bed, Kyrgyzstan. I spent multiple flights with the drone flying over this river bed studying the other-worldly patterns below.

4. On the shores of Lake Issy-Kul, and endorheic, saline lake in the Tian Shan mountains. Conveniently, despite its altitude it never freezes and is known locally as “warm lake.” It is the second largest mountain lake in the world. And the site of another amazing parkup that offered scenery, great walks, fun mountain biking and smooth waters for swimming and paddleboarding. Or even just somewhere to throw stones in the water!

5. Waiting for our Russian transit visa to come through, we spent a week or so touring around Georgia. Quite delightfully it was wildflower season and this meadow was a route of different wildflowers, so in single blocks like here, some like an artist’s palette of colours. Otis, our Hungarian vizsla, is happiest chasing stones. And if chasing stones includes leaping through the flowers like a stotting deer, so much the better!

Part 3 of my favourite pics from 2025.

What’s your favourite from this set?

1. Turkey. On the drive to Ishak Pasha Palace I pulled over on the side of the road, clambered in the truck roof and grabbed this shot as the rain fell in the distance.

2. Kyrgyzstan. The Kara Bura pass was our first route in Kyrgyzstan. The coloured earth, exposed edges and spectacular views made for an incredible introduction to this most naturally beautiful of countries.

3. Shymkent, Kazakhstan. A city I’d never heard of but one that was such a joy to visit. It’s mostly set up to appeal to Kazakh tourists, but the combination of a great city centre park-up (very rare!) a fabulous mosque in the same style as you’d find in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and great child friendly facilities made it a winner. Especially this splash pad that Isla loved playing around in cooling off from the summer heat.

4. Zanzibar, Tanzania. As part of my most recent work trip I visited Zanzibar including a trip to a local school to see the education system there at work, with the children learning English as well as Swahili.

5. Early in the year, on a beach in Greece. We took a small car ferry across to Elafonisos and spent a couple of days enjoying the beaches to ourselves. It was cool, but the water was clear and having no one else around was quite the joy (I sound like a hermit now!) of course a family fun aerial picture was essential!

#2 in this retrospective of favourite images from 2025. These are all Kyrgyzstan (do you get the feeling I liked it there?!)

1. Lenin Peak, Kyrgyzstan. One of the easiest 7000+m mountains to climb (apparently, I didn’t go up there) and often used a training ground for Everest.

2. Isla and her friend Matilda walking back to the truck after a morning of “homeschooling” that involved a hike up to a viewpoint, artwork in the wildness and clambering over rocks and boulders to learn about mountain safety. The rainbow mountains make a spectacular backdrop!

3. Jess and Otis. This was shot on our way up the Kumtor Gold Mine Route. Captured as a marketing image for Kovered Bags (use code “GLOBALTRACES” for 15% off their bags… which make awesome Christmas presents!)

4. Crossing a dried up high altitude lake to one of the best park up spots we’ve had … so great we visited twice and spent about 4 days there in total. The park up is unofficially titled “Desert Rock Dream” in iOverlander (an App we use to find parking places) and it really is an incredible out of the way dreamscape place to hang out.

5. The night before we crossed in to Tajikistan (the other side of those mountains in the background) we parked next to a dried river bed. Fortunately we didn’t park in the river bed, because not long after this was taken the meltwater from the mountains decided to flow through turning a dry river bed to a raging torrent! Before that though, Isla was in her element playing out in the wilds.

The year is drawing to an end, so it’s time for a little round up!

Over the next week or two I’m going to flood this feed with some of my favourite pictures from 2025. A bit like a retrospective.

Some of them will be “work” pictures, some will be ones that are available in my print store and some will be family truck life from our travels.

All of them have a story.

In today’s five:

1. This is home. A couple of days before we nearly rolled the truck down a hill, we were enjoying the Assay Plateau near a former Soviet Observatory in Kazakhstan. Great light, great scenery, friendly locals.

2. Lenin Peak, Kyrgyzstan. One of the best star fields I’ve seen anywhere, and that includes sailing across the Atlantic.

3. Dalmatian Pelican, Lake Kerkini. These enigmatic birds are huge and menacing in look. They were under threat of extinction, but thanks to great conservation efforts, especially around Lake Kerkini, they’re making a strong comeback.

4. The Tien Shan Mountains on the Kumtor Goldmine Route in Kyrgyzstan. A spectacular route, a slightly nervy bridge crossing, glorious scenery and the joy of bumping in to other overlanders.

5. Otis. Posing remarkably motionless in a waterfall in Georgia. Overlanding takes us to these kind out of the way places. Places where few others get to. And we get to explore them from the comfort of our home.

Which is your favourite?

Dinner is served… on the beach in Oman.

One of the joys of my job is the incredible table settings (and great food) I get to photograph and eat. And this one, on the beach in Salalah, Oman, was no exception. A really beautiful tablescape, backed by the ocean and overhead fairy lights completing the scene.

For those curious, I’m the photographer for the Abercrombie&Kent Private Jet around the world tours. This trip was cultural based, while my upcoming February trip is all about wildlife.

And then… after that trip, we will get back to travelling in the truck! I promise!

In case you think my work trip was all candid portraits (there were a lot and I will post more) here’s something a little different.

Pre-dawn reflected in the fountain at the front of the Raffles Hotel, Udaipur.

The Raffles in Udaipur is one of their newest properties and is located on a secluded island in the middle of one of the lakes. It’s genuinely a beautiful hotel and the staff are, as you may expect, super helpful.

GE Nostriches 🌆

Udaipur, India. A lady sitting outside her house near the temple cleans her chai set and prepares a cup of chai.

I was drawn to the simple, but vibrant, colour palette and the “unseen moment” soothing that happens hundreds or thousands of times every day across India, but normally goes unnoticed.

India is a photographer’s paradise. There is something about the light there…. It’s bright, but the thickness of the air, or some may say the smog, makes it diffuse and flattering for people photography. And it really helps the colours of their vibrant clothing, that despite the mess they find themselves surrounded by are always clean, crisp and glowing, pop.

Sticking with our Laos stop on my work trip, we visited an artists house and got to see incredible art work being produced, including by this young Buddhist monk who was making paper stencil cutouts that would later be used in repainting the inside of his temple.

The calm attention to detail and precision of his work was mesmerising to watch and the beautiful natural light, especially that bouncing up from the paper he was cutting, made for an incredible scene I had to watch for a while before capturing.

Also, I have a new website for anyone interested in buying physical artwork… www.newtonphoto.art All thoughts and feedback welcome 🙏🏻

We stopped at a temple in Laos on my work trip to receive a blessing from the monks.

Once it was over I was hanging around in the temple as all our guests filed out, when I saw this monk come out from the main body of the temple (right of picture) and walk straight towards me. The patches of light from the windows along the corridor and the door in the background gave a sense of depth and intrigue to the picture and his natural, calm demeanour completed the scene.

He then, as he reached the end of the corridor, turned to walk out of the door, the light catching his face and eye as he glanced up on his way through the doorway.

Another shot from my work trip - this on our final stop of the trip in Malta where one excursion was to watch the gun salute. I took up my position overlooking the saluting battery and selected a fast shutter speed and high speed continuous shooting. Watching a cannon fire, even dry firing with no cannonball, is quite the experience.

Good news… I’m still alive! After a month of work on a global private jet tour where I work as the photographer, I got back to Almaty and we decided we should head back to the UK to sort some family stuff out for my Mum. So that’s what we’ve been working on.

Jess and Isla flew back two days ago, Otis and I are currently in Istanbul airport waiting for our second flight.

The truck stays in Kazakhstan and we’ll be reuniting with her in January with the goal of getting in to Mongolia in late spring.

So for now, you’re going to get a bit of a back catalogue from my month away working, starting with this shot of Masaai warriors performing on the beach in Zanzibar.

#photography #lifewelltravelled #alternativeliving #liveborderless

GN Nostr! There’ll be a change in content for a few weeks as I’ve parked the family and truck in Almaty and I’m flying off for a month of work. First stop - transit through Istanbul to Lisbon. So pictures from my travels incoming! #needsmust #worklifebalance

We completed the Pamir Highway and then continued looping around back in to Kyrgyzstan, so here’s a video travel fact from the Toktogul Dam. You won’t believe quite how much water that holds back!

We’re putting in the kilometres right now as we head back to Almaty. I’ll then be flying out for a month of work taking me to 8 countries. Everyone else will chill out in Kazakhstan until I return and our adventures continue.

#overlanding #travelfacts #kyrgyzstan

The Pamir Highway run right alongside Afghanistan for several hundred kilometres. This is one of the wider sections and it’s still this close.

Close enough to see people in the other side.

To see the wave.

To see them smile.

To know they’re people too.

To remember that people are nice. But people in power are pricks.

Travel. It broadens your horizons. Literally and metaphorically.

There is no us and them.

We are one people.

#overlanding #travel #onepeople #borderless

We’re in Tajikistan. That guy on the motorbike the other side of the river…. Is in Afghanistan!

#overlanding #borderzone #pamirhighway

We’re still on the Pamir Highway (it is 1200km long after all!) and while we didn’t drive yesterday (admin and work day for us as I spent all day building a new website for print sales of my photography… more on that when it launches… and doing some admin around the truck - like cleaning the solar panels!)

But the day before was stunning. And hard. We spent all day driving right alongside the Afghanistan border. I don’t think we got more than 500m away from it at any point along about 190km. We even waved to Afghanistanis and they waved back across the river!

There will be pictures, but nothing from the drone… for obvious reasons!!

Also, we’re starting to get a bit more involved in this world and have updated our lightning address to something more meaningful: [email protected] (for anyone that feels the urge to zap!) Using

#photography #pamirhighway #overlandlife

So the Pamir Highway may be brutal in places, but it’s also beautiful.

Especially as you get a bit lower and the trees start to appear. We drove along imagining we could be in Switzerland (with much worse roads!)

This is in the last 100km towards Khorough, where we are now, that makes about the halfway point of the Pamir. Just 650km to go from Khorough to Dushanbe.

#photography #overlanding #pamirhighway #drone

Epic scenery ✅ High altitude ✅ Glorious mountains ✅ Deep blue skies ✅

The Pamir Highway ticks all the boxes. And then shakes the 💩 out of them with the bumps, potholes, tramtracks…and frankly non-existent road surface.

#photography #overlanding #pamirhighway #tajikistan

Postcards from Tajikistan

Something you might not realise about the Pamir Highway environment is that it is still highly active with tectonic activity.

The Pamir mountains were formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates and that continuing collision creates geothermal heat deep within the earth.

Combined with groundwater circulation, the area is dotted with hot springs - perfect for soothing bones and brains after a long day of travel through the harsh and unforgiving landscape.

#photography #travelfacts #overlanding #pamirhighway #tajikistan

Today was as beautiful as it was brutal.

The first 45km took 3hrs.

I’d love to say it got faster, but after 7hrs of driving we’d completed 115km.

But we started the day, as we did the day before, at Lake Bulunkul. One of the coldest inhabited spots of the former Soviet Union, with -63C having been recorded there in the summer.

It’s a stunning location though, and the mountains provide a natural wind block so it’s breathless in the morning and the water is like a mirror.

#overlanding #photography #pamirhighway #tajikistan

How big are the potholes on the Pamir Highway?

Yes.

To be clear, this is the highway. With trucks going back and forth. It is not an off road track. 🤯 Also, I’m 6’4”, if that helps give you a scale 🤣

#overlanding #pamirhighway #tajikistan

It doesn’t happen very often, but today we’d decided to stay put with the friends we’ve been in convoy with for the last week or so. Then by chance we dropped a message to another couple who we knew were in Tajikistan and it turns out they were less than 100km away. So they came over to meet us! They’re Canadian and this is the 6th country we’ve met them in since early last year - Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Georgia and now Tajikistan. Quite amazing since we’ve taken totally different routes! Finally a Belgian guy on a bike came by and although he thought about continuing on, the spectre of fresh bread baking and a BBQ this evening proved too much of a draw. Also, he’s a baker by trade and since there’s a birthday in the group today, he’s baked a cake!

So four overland vehicles at 4300m camped up on a high altitude plateau surrounded by mountains. Perfect.

This is overlanding. The people you meet and stories you hear.

#overlandlife #photography #tajikistan

Tajikistan 🤯

Yesterday we had a bit of a moment. A slide slope nearly collected us as we slipped off the track, buried in the left hand side and got very close to rolling. Again.

More on that later.

But today was much better! Glorious scenery, great light and now parked up at a high altitude dried lake plateau at 4300m surrounded by towering peaks.

Travel fact: Tajikistan is a mountainous, landlocked country of around 10million people. The average height of the country is 3186m with mountains covering a little over 90% of the land.

#photography #overlanding #tajikistan

It’s the first day of school for many in the UK, and since Isla is 4 she’d be going in to reception class.

Just because she lives in a truck travelling the world doesn’t mean she should miss out on this milestone, so this is here “first day of school” pictures in front of her home, in the Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan.

Lessons today have been…

• paddling in a mountain stream (water safety)
• a walk in the mountains (mountain safety/PE)
• rock collecting (geology)
• where we are in the world (geography) …and some phonics and numbers on Reading Eggs and Khan Academy.

Postcards from Tajikistan… #1

If these mountains could only speak, the things they’d have seen would be enough to fill a library of books.

Why?

Because this is the Pamir Highway, part of the northern section of the ancient silk route, described by Marco Polo in the 13th Century.

In fact, if you look closely at the bottom picture you may just be able to make out a Caravanserai, or ancient hotel.

This section, about 40km north of Murghab, makes it very obvious to see why it was a popular route - the clear, wide valley pass, with a river running through it to provide drinking water, would have given a “path of least resistance” while travelling, even if that valley floor is at an altitude of 4000m, so the air is thin and movement, until you’re acclimated, steals your breath and leaves you needing a sit down in the shade. Shade arguably being the one thing this area is missing due to an environment that resembles a high altitude desert.

#photography #silkroute #overlanding #tajikistan #borderlessliving

Overland life… there is always something to do to the vehicle… even when you think all is well!

We’re parked a little over 4000m on the Pamir and this morning I came outside and spotted two little wet patches on the ground.

A quick investigation showed it to be coolant. So a peak around and I found the two sources - rubber pipes on to metal pipes where the cooler temps at this altitude have caused the metal to contract allowing for a small weep around the joint.

Solution? 8mm socket and a quick nip up. And then watch and wait. 🤞

📍Lake Karakul, Tajikistan.

Is this the start of a “Postcards from Tajikistan” series to follow those from Kyrgyzstan?

Maybe, time will tell.

In the meantime, as I mentioned in the previous post, Lake Karakul is part of a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s split in to an east and west basin: a shallower eastern section and deeper western section.

The lake, along with the islands located within, has been identified as and “Important Bird Area” by Birdlife International.

#photography #globalexplorer #overlandfamily

Today was not short of views.

We started at Lake Karakul, a 52km anechoic lake that’s said to have formed in an impact crater. At just about 3600m above sea level it’s a pretty spectacular spot - and is why it’s part of the Tajik National Park which was also inducted to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2013.

This evening we’ve found a delightfully out of the way spot in the mountains.

But the real highlight was the middle of the day - the Ak Baital pass. At 4655m above sea level, it’s the highest part of the M41 Pamir Highway.

#photography #overlandlife #tajikistan

Expect lots of shots like this. This is the Pamir Highway. The long, lonesome road surrounded by epic mountains.

Did you know that Tajikistan is 90% mountainous and about 50% of the land mass is over 3000m.

If you’re a mountain lover, it’s the place to be.

#photography #overlanding #tajikistan #centralasia #borderlessliving

You’ve twisted my arm… there will be more postcards from Kyrgyzstan, but back to the photos.

Three pictures taken within an hour from three spots no more than 10m from each other.

This was our last parkup officially in Kyrgyzstan and the middle image is looking towards Tajikistan and the Kyrzl-Art pass.

This pass, at 4280m above sea level is in the Trans-Alay range and is rugged and dry mostly. Which is convenient because the “road” is treacherous in the wet with steep, muddy switchbacks that can be impossible to navigate when wet.

Our border crossing was very quick - 22mins out of Kyrgyzstan (15mins of which was waiting for them to let us in) and then in to Tajikistan was less than 1hr.

#photography #overlandfamily #decentralisedliving

Postcards from Kyrgyzstan #8 and a different style of “postcard.” All filmed in the last 4 days.

Today we crossed the border in to Tajikistan. So this will be (may be… I have quite the backlog!) the last Kyrgyz postcard for a while.

All thoughts welcome. Do you like this style of postcard or prefer the image collages?

Family portraits… we don’t get them everywhere we go, but it’s always fun to do when we get the chance. All three of these from this year.

Mother Nature continues to assert her dominance by pointing out how small and insignificant we really are.

Even in a 15t truck.

#photography #kyrgyzstan #overlandlife

I often get asked why we chose this lifestyle of living in a truck travelling the world.

The answer is both complex and simple.

I’ve never been one to conform to the normal way of life and frankly I’d rather drive around the world seeing places than sit in an office dreaming of places.

From a family perspective, the most important years of your child’s life are the early ones. This way I get to spend 24/7 with Isla. To watch her grow and develop and to have a big hand in how that goes. To show her other people, places, creeds and cultures and hope that she realises we are all one people. Not to mention I get to show her the world before humans completely destroy it.

I also have quite the issue with the normal education system. But that’s probably a topic for another day (not because I had a bad experience, far from it, I just don’t think it’s setup to allow people to thrive and achieve their potential.)

Anyway, for the foreseeable future, when someone asks that question, I’ll just show them this video and hopefully that’ll be enough reason and explanation.

Otis is happiest outdoors.

When we lived in London he went to the same park 3 times a day, met the same dogs, had the same smells… basically he was young and bored.

Now, every day is a new adventure, new smells, new dogs, new mountains, new tracks, new yaks, cows, sheep and horses.

He is living his best life.

#photography #dogstr #overlanding #livefree #borderlessliving

Top overlanding tip… never park on a river bed, even if it is completely dry.

We stopped here last night and the river bed looked inviting because it was nice and flat and bone dry.

But fortunately common sense prevailed as about 1hr after we’d stopped, water started flowing down the river getting up to knee deep in places - the result of meltwater from the snowy mountains up ahead… which is why if you have a river crossing to do, they are always best done in the morning before the meltwater puts the river in to flood.

#overlandlife #photography #kyrgyzstan

Yes, these mountains are that colour to the naked eye.

Yes, it’s mind-blowing.

Yes, I could stare at them all day.

Yes, you should visit Kyrgyzstan and see them for yourself.

#pamir #photography #aerial #overlanding

Not every day is aweso… nope, I’d be lying if I said that.

But today was especially awesome.

Started at 3800m in front of Lenin Peak. Finished at 3260m about 20km from the Tajikistan border.

That means tomorrow is a border crossing and the real start of the Pamir Highway. And a new country for all of us… 106 for me, 26 for Isla, Otis and Bebe… and Jess doesn’t keep count!

Today had quite a lot going for it.

We left the Tulpar Lake region and retraced our steps down the track to Sary Mogul.

Then we drove 14km along the road before turning on to the track that leads to Lenin Peak base camp - where we’d hiked to yesterday.

If we thought the Tulpar Lake track was pretty, the Lenin Peak track was off the charts.

And now we’re parked above a glacial river, looking at Lenin Peak and the sun has just set turning the rainbow coloured mountains all sorts of shades of pinks and purples.

This is what overlanding gives you - freedom, mobility, borderless living and the chance to put your house in the most beautiful places in the world.

#photography #overlandfamily #kyrgyzstan #borderlessliving

This morning at Tulpar Lake, Kyrgyzstan.

Not long before we went out for a hike to Lenin Peak base camp and got caught in a mixed hail/snow storm 🙌

All four seasons in a day.

#photography #overlandfamily #livefree #borderlessliving

We’re on our way to start the Pamir Highway, but with the Ak-Baital pass at 4655m to go over, altitude acclimation from this direction is particularly important.

So we’ve wound our way to Tulpar Kul, or Tulpar Lakes. At the foot of Mt Lenin (7134m tall and one of the tallest mountains in the former Soviet Union) they are a series of high altitude lakes around 3500m up that make a great space to let the body prepare for the thinner air.

We’ll spend two nights here and then head up the Lenin Peak track to get a bit higher still, and then we’ll head for the Tajikistan Border and that 4655m crossing.

Expect more pictures from these lakes if the weather clears, because they are spectacular.

📍Kyrgyzstan

Ever wondered what 33 parrots lying down would look like? According to Kyrgyzstan it’s this… 33 Parrots Pass on the route up to Son Kul lake at 3060m above sea level.

Those switchbacks, some of which are quite tight in a 9.5m long truck, take you up almost 600m of elevation gain before spitting you out on an alpine plateau with Kyrgyzstan’s second largest lake in the middle of it.

#overlandlife #borderlessliving

Postcards from Kyrgyzstan #7

Lake Song Kul, Kyrgyztan, sits at an altitude of 3016m (9,895ft.)

It is the largest freshwater later in the country. And second largest lake overall after Issyk Kul (which is slightly brackish due to evaporation.)

Descending from Song Kul is a feast for the eyes. You begin on the alpine plateau before winding your way down a series of incredible dirt track hairpins gradually getting down to the tree line where towering stands of pine trees cover the landscape, with yurts nestled in between them - a far less brutal summer homestead than those up on the plateau.

Further down the pines give way to deciduous trees and eventually, after descending about 1.5km in vertical height, you return to the low trees and scrub land.

#borderlessliving #kyrgyzstan #overlandlife

Today we drove 213km.

We lost a wheel rim clip. (Quite important!)

We lost two traction boards. (Also quite important)

We nearly ran out of fuel. (Actually also pretty important!)

But it was an adventure! All this despite the fact we were driving on a “main” road.

Thing is, “main” roads in Kyrgyzstan hit a little different…

If Kyrgyzstan isn’t on your bucket list, it should be.
