What Remains After the Job: An Anonymous Tract on Useful Work and Trust

A No-Holds-Barred Guide for the Unemployed but Not Helpless is a ten page tract, undated and with authorship unverified beyond an anonymous plural signoff, that an archive files under Free & Unashamed. It addresses people who have lost a job, and sometimes a home, and argues that the loss removed a social status, while the skills and trusted relationships useful for rebuilding can remain available, depending on each person's circumstances.

The authors open with sympathy, saying they have been unemployed and desperate themselves, and tell readers that losing the job was probably not their fault. Their diagnosis then widens into sweeping rhetoric, claiming that authorities deliberately made everyone feel inferior, that every productive worker was abused and that monetary fraud has reached its limit. These claims rest on assertion, and the tract's practical argument stands independently of them.

That argument begins in the second chapter, which divides a person's world into "natural society" and "forced society." Natural society means family, neighbors, coworkers, trading partners and anyone else a person can trust and confide in, and people enter it by invitation. The mechanism is informational. An employment status records one employer's decision at one moment. A circle of people who have traded with you and watched you keep commitments holds a longer record, updated each time you act.

The first item on the tract's action list turns that record into commerce: choose something of value, make or do it, show it to people who could want it, and trade. A potential customer who accepts or declines an offer reports specific information about its usefulness, which a gap in an employment history lacks. Item twelve extends the logic to teaching, asking anyone with a skill such as welding or sailing to pass it along. Item fifteen asks readers to respect property, since losing it costs a person the part of a life spent earning it, and item seventeen tells them to drop racial resentment and judge each individual by conduct. Read together, these items describe conditions that make cooperation with relative strangers safe enough to repeat.

The tract sets local demand, credit, housing, illness and dependents outside its scope, though each can shape how far its first item carries a person with little savings in a weak market. The plan for rebuilding rests on exhortation, with recovery outcomes still to be tested. Its suggestion that losing everything restores freedom treats poverty and homelessness with bravado, when both remain serious losses. Several items dismiss legal limits outright, leaning on natural rights and an idealized common law. The passages on camp protection and state avoidance, along with a cooperative supply example, leave the rights of affected neighbors and owners unresolved, and asserting a natural right confers no lawful immunity. They also sit uneasily beside item fifteen.

The epilogue recovers the stronger thread. It hands the decision back to the reader and names responses it rejects, including theft and destruction as well as following a strongman or a guru who promises rescue. That rejection keeps the call for agency tied to production and voluntary exchange.

The archival text of A No-Holds-Barred Guide for the Unemployed but Not Helpless is strongest where repeated trade turns kept commitments into a record that outlasts a job title, and weakest where its camp-defense and water plans reach neighbors and owners whose rights it leaves an open legal question.
