The Kybalion

The Kybalion was published in Chicago in 1908 by the Yogi Publication Society under the credit "Three Initiates." It sets out a Hermetic philosophy built on seven principles: Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. Its central claim is that THE ALL is infinite living mind and that the universe is a mental creation held within it. From that premise the authors build a practice of self-direction, which governs attention and moods by the laws they say govern the cosmos. The book is worth reading as a compact system. All of its practical advice traces back to one cosmological premise, and it weakens wherever analogy has to do the work of argument.

The introduction credits the teaching to Hermes Trismegistus, says he lived in Egypt at the time of Abraham, and traces the esoteric doctrine of every race back to him. The authors hedge only one of these claims. Hermes was Abraham's instructor "if the legends be true." They state that Hermes was contemporary with Abraham, and that every race's teachings descend from him, with no such qualifier. The observation that the text leaves every part of this lineage historically undocumented is our own judgment as reviewers. This is a 1908 English publication that presents itself as heir to an ancient tradition.

The introduction says who the book is for before it presents any doctrine. It speaks to students who have already passed through the main portals of occult study and become discouraged by fragments that contradict each other. It offers them a master key to the inner doors. The authors describe the Hermetic teachings as the most closely guarded of all occult teachings, handed from teacher to student and released when the student is ready to receive them. The final chapter adds that teachings long locked in the minds of the people who held them were never meant to be stored away. Its Law of Use requires knowledge to show up in action, and it compares unused knowledge to hoarded metal. In this book, initiation means passing the teaching selectively to a prepared student, followed by a duty to practice it.

Chapter V does the main metaphysical work. Because the universe is many and always changing, it falls short of THE ALL. Because we perceive it, it is something. And because THE ALL cannot be divided, the universe cannot be cut out of its substance. The authors conclude that the universe is a mental creation of infinite mind, and they mock people who reason from the same premises to the claim that they are God. Chapter VI adds a safeguard. To THE ALL the universe is like a dream, yet finite beings must treat it as real and base their actions on its laws. In the authors' image, the half-wise who treat the universe's relative unreality as permission to defy its laws are broken against the rocks. The wise instead use higher law against lower law, and the authors set transmutation against presumptuous denial. The book does urge readers to cultivate the mental qualities they want. But readers expecting a doctrine that wishes away consequences or sets aside the ordinary laws of the relative world will find Chapter VI arguing against it.

The practical chapters work through symbols. Chapter X treats opposites as degrees on one scale. Heat becomes cold when vibration is lowered. In the same way hate can be transmuted into love and fear into courage, but fear can never become love, because the two sit on different scales. This same-kind restriction is the most precise element of the doctrine. Chapter XV turns it into a rule for attention: to dissolve fear, cultivate courage, the way opening the shutters removes darkness without anyone sweeping it out. Chapter XI describes moods as a pendulum, with enthusiasm swinging back into depression. The authors' Law of Neutralization lifts the self above that swing while the pendulum keeps moving. Chapter XIV adds mental gender, a willing "I" and a receptive "Me." The authors use this pair to explain suggestion, which they compare to an idea planted in another mind like a cuckoo's egg, and they charge that most people let stronger wills think for them. Chapter XII completes the account of agency. Chance is the name for causes not yet recognized. The adept is said to direct causes on lower planes while staying subject to higher law, like a swimmer working with the current while a log drifts along in it.

The cost of the system is its dependence on axioms and analogies. Chapter X rests emotional transmutation on the physical analogy of heat lowered into cold, on positive and negative poles said to run through other same-scale pairs, and on asserted observations of one mind influencing another. Chapter XV adds the image of light clearing a dark room and appeals to modern psychologists without citing any. These images illustrate the doctrine without showing that moods sit on scales the way temperature does. Chapters X and XIV stretch the same vocabulary to cover telepathy, hypnotism and mental treatment of melancholy, claims the authors assert without testing. The authors close by inferring that a mental universe may be ruled only by mentality and that mental transmutation must change its conditions. Even a reader who grants the premise of Chapter V gets no proof from it that an individual mind has power over external conditions, because an account of what the universe is made of does not settle that question. The book supplies no independent test of that power.

Read The Kybalion to see how a 1908 occult text ties a mental cosmology to disciplines of attention and will. Its own qualifications, the same-kind limit on transmutation and the duty to respect the laws of the relative world, set it apart from cruder promises that thought alone can override physical circumstance. Begin with Chapters V and VI, because the practical chapters depend on them. Expect capitalized abstractions throughout, and expect assertion at the points where a philosopher would want argument. Readers looking for documented history of ancient Hermetism, or for tested psychology, will need other books.
