"Pedicabs should be a fun way to explore London - but too often people face rip-off fares, blaring music and unsafe behaviour. We're bringing in these new rules so that both customers and drivers can benefit from an industry that is more safe, more reliable and professional." Yet despite the changes, the industry remains riddled with rogue operators. Just last month, an Express investigation found that around Westminster Bridge alone - a spot crossed by more than 15 million tourists every year - legitimate pedicab operators are being bullied out of the market by an organised group from Romania. When our team confronted operators in Westminster, Piccadilly and Leicester Square, they reacted aggressively or fled. Several riders were caught on camera concealing laminated menu cards advertising exorbitant ÂŁ165 fares. When challenged, some claimed not to understand English.
And while being ripped off is bad enough, the intimidation and alleged attempts to rob passengers, such as those described by Ford, make these vehicles an altogether more sinister proposition. Which brings me back to John Lewis. The retailer appears to be suggesting that hailing one of these vehicles is a perfectly acceptable, whimsical way for a woman on her own to travel across London in search of Christmas inspiration. I fully expected the advert to end with Kristin Scott Thomas being robbed. At worst, I feared it might end in murder. Instead of instilling Christmas cheer, John Lewis has instilled festive fear. Worse still, its glossy depiction of a rickshaw ride risks encouraging thousands of people to climb aboard without understanding the potential dangers. Perhaps its marketing team should do a little more research before choosing to give such a questionable mode of transport the festive seal of approval.

ISLAMIC GRAFFITI AND BEHEADED JESUS STATUE AT WARRINGTON WAR MEMORIAL
A historic war memorial at St Albanâs Church in Bewsey, Warrington, was vandalised overnight around Halloween.
Reports say the statue of Jesus on the crucifix was beheaded, with the head removed or damaged. A blue sheet was later placed over the statue. Yellow spray paint in Arabic script was written to the base plaques over the names of the war dead. According to reports, the writing translates as âPeace be upon youâ (as-salamu alaykum).
The memorial commemorates local parishioners who died in the World Wars. The damage was discovered on Sunday morning, just days before Remembrance Sunday.

https://unherd.com/newsroom/george-clooney-is-fetishising-peasant-cuisine/
You will be familiar with the fetishization of an Italian mamma or nonna. Picture a weathered older woman, sitting outside her orto (kitchen garden) on an upturned crate, shaving puntarelle (chicory) into ice water. Throw in a toothless village baker, the wizened hands of a pastaia (pasta maker), and you have the perfect B-roll for a romantic film set in Tuscany. Increasingly, we judge cucina povera (peasant cuisine) by the identity of its maker, rather than the food itself. Authenticity is an ingredient that somehow gets stewed in the pot with the tomatoes and garlic. But thereâs something rather unpleasant about this romantic attachment to other peopleâs poverty. Food historian Rachel Laudan, in her 2001 essay A Plea for Culinary Modernism, refers to âCulinary Ludditesâ who turn their nose up at supermarket bread, frozen food and modern agriculture. Her mother described the âgrinding, chopping, and cookingâ as âservitudeâ to a household of eight to 10 people, every day of the year. Laudan recalls Italian peasants suffering terrible illnesses from monotonous diets, and a Mexican friend chastised by foreign tourists for serving Italian food. âWhy canât we eat spaghetti, too?â she complained. Weâve also forgotten how enthusiastically our grandmothers embraced canned goods and food processors, precisely because they made life easier. By treating modernity as cultural vandalism, Laudan warns, âwe are reducing the options of others.â Of course thereâs nothing wrong with traditional cooking, or a 65-year-old Italian woman choosing to move to France to run Clooneyâs restaurant. But one suspects sheâs being hired to perform a role, to play the Italian mamma for paying customers and satisfy their appetite for authenticity. Is she there to be a talented and respected chef, or to be a curiosity, wheeled out for the customers?
Perhaps this vision of authenticity is the greatest luxury of all. The wealthy can retreat to their second or third homes in the countryside, surrounded by residents whose lives seem untouched by modernity. Multi-millionaires can admire these peopleâs traditions, celebrate their hardships and the dignity of their manual labor, and congratulate themselves on discovering a more honest way of life. And they can do all this without lifting anything heavier than a fork.

Jones, who previously used the name âLisa Jones,â but is now referring to himself as âWillow,â had only been released from a womenâs prison one month prior to being arrested for the latest sexual offense. In October 2024, Jones grabbed a 31-year-old woman as she walked past St. Maryâs cathedral in central Sydney. CCTV footage recorded the attack as Jones pulled her by her waist into a hidden corner. When she demanded to be let go, Jones replied, âI want to fâk you. Just let me fâk you.â When Jones was standing before the court, he reportedly exclaimed, âI identify as transgender and queer⌠I had nothing to do with it.â The woman shared the effect of the âunprecedented, unexpected, and aggressive actâ in a victim impact statement she read to the court. âThe experience permanently made me more aware of a risk in public spaces and more cautious in situations where I previously felt at ease,â she said. The serial sex offender had committed similar crimes previously. Jones has a prior record for sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl in Germany, for which he served six years in a male prison there prior to being deported to Australia in 2018.
While it is unclear how many trans-identified male transfers are currently housed at Dame Phyllis Frost, Reduxx has reported on another sex offender who is serving a shockingly lenient 4-year sentence there for creating horrific child sexual abuse material of his own child and distributing it to a paedophile lover. Yet disturbingly, the acts of child sexual abuse committed by Harper were reframed during court proceedings as a form of validation of his âgender identityâ. The judge in the case, Nola Karapanagiotidis, allowed Harperâs supposed experience with âgender dysphoriaâ and âtransphobiaâ to serve as mitigating factors, and accepted the argument from the defence that he had abused his own daughter solely to be âvalidated⌠as a woman and a sexual person.â

When questioned, the university drearily reaffirmed its commitment to âbeing an inclusive and welcoming place where all members of our community feel respected, valued and able to be themselvesâ. How welcoming it must be for the eighteen-year-old women in Rattleyâs classes went unmentioned. The spokesperson added that the university âdoes not comment on individual personnel mattersâ. Yet this is part of a much broader pattern: exhibitionists exploiting workplace anti-discrimination policies to excuse their peccadilloes. Tellingly, Rattley uses they/them pronouns on LinkedIn, and complements his fulsome beard with red lipstick and nail varnish. One can imagine the watercooler conversations in Oxfordâs Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Human Resources teams. If a manâs comically large moobs are part of his âtrue and authentic selfâ, does the universityâs âbring your whole self to workâ mantra require everyone else to smile along? Why, decades after women fought to rid factories of nude calendars and offices of Page Three pin-ups, are institutions still so reluctant to tell employees that overtly sexual displays, whether pornography or plastic breasts, are unacceptable?
This is a social problem before itâs a legal one. Once, a man who arrived at work in fetishwear would, at the very least, have been told to go home and get changed. Today, such boundaries have melted away, replaced with veneration of âbraveâ cross-dressers, from drag queens to the trans-identifying men routinely celebrated on cheesy lists of inspirational women. Whether shemale porn or humiliation rituals set by online dominatrices, some heavy users of pornography treat the real world merely as a backdrop to their fantasies. It is no surprise that bizarre, highly sexualised behaviours are emerging among the first generation to grow up with unfettered access to hardcore pornography â and no one has the gumption to tell them No.

Kellie-Jay Keen @kelliejaykeen has been charged with a criminal offence over posts criticising Islam, Muslim cultural practices and Islamism.
The Free Speech Union is proud to be defending her. In a free society, no religion or cultural practice should be immune from criticism. Since Labour came to power, the number of FSU cases involving people penalised for criticising Islam has doubled. It is now the single biggest category in our casework. And now, with a state-approved definition of Islamophobia â rebranded as âanti-Muslim hostilityâ â things are only getting worse. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Communities Secretary Angela Rayner met Muslim community leaders in Downing Street. Burnham took a swipe at critics of Islam, saying âsome of the languageâ opposition parties use âis unacceptableâ, and told the leaders âwe need to find ways with you to demonstrate that more and moreâ.
We now await Raynerâs appointment of an âIslamophobia tsarâ who will help enforce the definition. All five hand-picked members of the Working Group that drafted it have concerning links to Islamist organisations, as FSU Research and Policy Director @davidroseuk2019 exposed in his report. We have little hope that the appointed tsar will be good news for free speech. Meanwhile, the Government is refusing to say who submitted responses to the Working Group, so we cannot know which groups shaped the definition. Islamists may well have had a hand in its drafting.

But experts and clinics have called for regulations to be introduced for aesthetic practitioners providing the service. It comes as one psychology academic warned people with a cleft lip were being "deliberately targeted" by the aesthetics industry and "left vulnerable to potential harm and exploitation". Aesthetics treatment for people with scars involves using filler to reduce their appearance, restore symmetry, and add volume after cleft lip surgery. There are currently no regulations in the aesthetics industry, and some people believe that practitioners like Rose-Dorland should not be allowed to offer and administer these treatments. Dr Neil Brierley is a consultant cleft and plastic surgeon in the West Midlands Cleft Service.
He said it was important for people who have had a cleft lip or have loved ones with a cleft to engage with NHS teams that provide lifelong support and care. The surgeon said they could offer an "unbiased" opinion to come to "an appropriate decision between the individual that's seeking assistance and what we feel is their best and worst options". "What we don't want is to have people who are potentially vulnerable who are looking for maybe a quick fix or a solution to feel that they don't have an option to come back to the NHS," he said. "And they certainly do not have to, but we are here if they need us." Brierley said everyone was entitled to their own choice about using aesthetic practitioners, but that it was important to be aware of how to deal with any complications. "I think it's important to inform your cleft team because it may impact any further treatment that you might need," he said. "For example if you were wanting revisional surgery, placement of filler in certain areas would prevent certain operations from being possible afterwards."

Starling murmurations are described as some of the "most amazing spectacles" to witness and they happen just before the birds go down to roost - but the reason why they do it is still uncertain.
A decade on from a study into the behaviour, researchers at University of Gloucestershire are repeating the research and inviting the public to take part in a new, nationwide study.
Lead researcher Prof Anne Goodenough said they were interested in seeing what had "changed in the past decade, particularly because starlings are a declining species".
Information on where and when displays occur, the size and duration and whether birds of prey are present, is what researchers are looking to gather.

"I worked in sales in Iran. I sold cosmetics," she tells BBC Panorama.
But that all changed the day her only child was shot dead in front of her by Iranian security forces. SELF-DESCRIBED JIHADI Abdullah Khan has been jailed for six-and-a-half years for setting fire to a pub owned by Conor McGregor and attacking two gardaĂ with a knife on a Dublin street while shouting, âAllahu Akbarâ.
Judge Karen OâConnor, presiding at the three-judge Special Criminal Court, imposed âstrictâ post-release conditions requiring 24-year-old Khan to engage with the probation services for four years after he has served his time in prison. The judge noted a report which stated that the primary objective of Khanâs probation is to support him to disengage from people involved in radical behaviours and ideologies. His post-release supervision, the judge said, is deemed necessary to ensure public protection.
Judge OâConnor sentenced Khan for eight separate offences, with each sentence to run concurrently. On a charge that he engaged in terrorist activity by setting fire to the Black Forge Inn, Drimnagh Road, Dublin 12, she imposed a sentence of seven years and six months with the final year suspended for four years.

British supermarkets have been placed on high alert after shops across Europe were hit by cyber hackers who seized control of their fridges and freezers. The National Cyber Security Centre â a wing of intelligence agency GCHQ â has warned retailers to be aware of the threat following the attacks, which have caused widespread damage. Dozens of supermarkets in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Luxembourg and Estonia have been targeted â just weeks after hackers turned up the temperatures of cooling units in hundreds of French grocery stores. The latest attack involved a number of fridges manufactured by Belgian firm Sabcobel. The company said unitsâ evaporators were switched to defrost mode, causing temperatures to spike from -27C to 50C in some cases.
It is similar to the method used in last monthâs attack on French supermarkets, which led to millions of eurosâ worth of food being thrown away and caused a number of fires. The French hacks affected fridges supplied by Danfoss, which also works with British supermarkets including Tesco and Sainsburyâs. Around 40 Delhaize and Colruyt supermarkets in Belgium and Luxembourg were hit, along with 15 Carrefour stores. While no one has claimed responsibility for either attack, the cases have put a spotlight on rising anxiety over hybrid attacks spreading from conflicts on European borders after Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly denied involvement in any sabotage or hybrid warfare operations.

The SNP has been accused of an "astonishing" waste of taxpayer money after it emerged school bags being handed to primary one pupils are costing more than double their market value. John Swinney wants to hand the bags, which will include the likes of pencils, a pencil case, crayons, a notebook and a water bottle, to around 47,000 children. Ms Gallacher said: "My trip to a well-known retailer has exposed the astonishing waste of John Swinneyâs schoolbag gimmick. It beggars belief that he is happy to charge taxpayersâ ÂŁ28 per bag, when we know you can purchase a backpack and the items Swinney is planning to give Primary One pupils for less than half the deal he struck.
"This raises further serious questions about the contract which was awarded to a group who have already benefitted from other SNP schemes. Instead of these government-issued schoolbags, Swinney should be focusing money and resources on restoring Scotlandâs reputation for educational excellence, ending the poverty-related attainment gap and tackling soaring levels of violence in our schools. "A taxpayer-funded schoolbag will do nothing to tackle these issues. This is a distraction from Swinney to try and hide from SNP incompetence, and another shocking example of how this arrogant nationalist government have no regard for Scotlandâs taxpayers." The backpacks will be made in China before being shipped to Edinburgh. They will be compiled by marketing and publishing firm APS Group, which was also commissioned to run the baby box scheme.
Questions were raised last week as to why APS was handed the ÂŁ2.7 million contract without it going out to tender. The firm was also involved in producing a "draft" independence bill before the 2021 Scottish election.

Sandie Peggie has lost her employment tribunal case against the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), after a judge dismissed claims that the union discriminated against her because of her beliefs. In a judgment issued on Monday, Judge Melanie Sangster rejected three complaints brought by the NHS Fife nurse, who accused the RCN of failing to support her adequately during her legal dispute with her employer. The tribunal accepted that Ms Peggie's belief that biological sex is immutable is protected under the Equality Act 2010, but found that the union's decisions were not motivated by those beliefs.
The ruling follows Ms Peggie's victory in separate proceedings against NHS Fife in December 2025, when a tribunal upheld harassment complaints against the health board relating to its handling of the changing-room dispute and subsequent disciplinary process. However, other claims against NHS Fife were dismissed, along with all claims against Dr Upton. Ms Peggie was cleared of misconduct by NHS Fife in July 2025. The latest judgment concerns only her discrimination allegations against the RCN and does not alter the findings in her separate case against NHS Fife.

The establishment that garlands the veil spent decades refusing to look at what arrived with it, for Baroness Caseyâs national audit of June 2025 found clear over-representation of Asian and Pakistani-heritage men among grooming-gang suspects in the Greater Manchester, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire records.
The audit found the question of ethnicity âshied away fromâ for years, and one case file in which the word âPakistaniâ had been physically whited out of a suspected child rapistâs record, the stateâs own hand erasing the description of men its officers feared to name.
Every recommendation Casey made was accepted, and a statutory inquiry now sits with ethnicity, religion and culture written into its remit, an admission thirty years late of what the victims of Rochdale, Rotherham and Telford said from the beginning.
Casey herself supplied the licence the inquiry now works under: âIt is not racist to examine the ethnicity of the offendersâ.

Another problem is that Prevent focusses on the wrong issue. Data from 2025 show that âextreme right-wingâ concerns accounted for 21 per cent of all referrals. This is more than double the proportion of referrals for âIslamist extremismâ (10 per cent). Whatâs more, compared with the previous year, referrals for âextreme right-wingâ concerns increased, while referrals for âIslamist extremismâ decreased (down from 13 per cent). Yet this is completely at odds with the reality of the terrorist threats we face in the UK. Since 2001, nearly 100 people have been killed in terrorist attacks in Britain. Fifty-two people were slaughtered in London on 7 July 2005 when Islamist terrorists bombed public transport. In 2017, three separate attacks resulted in multiple deaths at Westminster Bridge, Manchester Arena and London Bridge. Just two people have been killed by right-wing extremists: Mohammed Saleem (2013) and Jo Cox (2016). Prevent officers kept busy dealing with children referred for right-wing extremism have less time to worry about the far more real threat posed by Islamists.
Panic about children, especially boys, being radicalised by right-wing extremists spills over into actual arrests. Figures from UK Counter Terrorism Policing show that one in five of those arrested for terrorism-related offences is under 18. Earlier this month, a 15-year-old boy was arrested for calling a Conservative councillor a ârent boyâ. Four police officers in two cars turned up outside the house of the Reform UK activist, despite Reform being a mainstream political party and it not being illegal to call someone a ârent boyâ. The boy understandably believes he was targeted for his political views and allegiances. If so, then the definition of âextremismâ has been stretched so much it is now meaningless. Something else is going on, too. An increasing number of children obsessed with violence, mass shootings and weapons hints at a prevalent sense of nihilism. As we see playing out across France right now, Western nations harbour a proportion of youngsters who feel only contempt for the society they inhabit. They have no sense of allegiance to their country, its history or its institutions. Teachers, journalists, politicians and cultural curators who should have taught children to love their country and respect their fellow citizens have failed in this task.

Academics have been denied promotion for opposing the concept of unconscious bias. Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) only promotes those who pass a training course that requires participants to express agreement with the contested concept. Unconscious bias is the idea that hidden prejudices may influence behaviour and decision-making, and has been popularised in initiatives to promote diversity, equality and inclusion. However, critics argue that the concept is flawed because it would not be possible to identify truly unconscious biases. All applicants for promotion at the university must first have âcompleted all mandatory and refresher trainingâ, according to its Academic Promotion 2025-26 Applicantâs Statement document. This includes a âWhat is Unconscious Bias?â module, which cannot be passed without completing a quiz whose questions require participants to express agreement with the concept.
Participants can only achieve a pass mark if they select answers including the assertions that it âwill helpâ if they âaccept that we have unconscious biasesâ and that it is âtrueâ that âunconscious biases help us to react quickly but can cloud our judgmentâ. One academic told The Telegraph that the universityâs policy promoted âideological conformityâ and was tantamount to âcompelled speechâ. âIt is extraordinary that a university should force its academics to affirm scientifically contested claims as though they were articles of faith,â the academic said. âThis is the sort of ideological conformity we ought to associate with authoritarian regimes, not British universities.â The academic added: âAcademics at Queen Mary cannot apply for promotion unless they have passed all mandatory training modules, including this one. I know multiple people who have either refused to carry out the âcompelled speechâ struggle session, and thus cannot get promoted, or have given the officially approved answers in violation of their own convictions.

After undergoing two emergency Caesarean sections in 2018 and 2021, Kyra had hoped a planned procedure to deliver her third child would be different.
The surgery, on 22 October 2025, had been scheduled because her baby was in the breech position, with his feet positioned first. Recalling the operation, the 36-year-old says: "They make it as comfortable as possible for you. There's chatter and music playing, it's only afterwards you realise this is major surgery." Kyra, of Kibworth Beachamp in Leicestershire, says her recovery was "horrific" and she is still left with physical trauma.
"Because I'd had two emergency Caesareans before, I had a baseline to go off," she says. "As it was planned, I thought it would be a lot better. "Granted, on the day of the Caesarean I was really well looked after, but afterwards everything drops off. Everything's focused on the baby, but you've just had open surgery. I took ages to heal." A year on, Kyra has pelvic floor problems, bladder symptoms and is still dealing with pain around her scar, which she says took five months to fully close. She adds: "My scar, especially on one side, is very pulled in. It affects day-to-day life; just walking, any physical activity that I do, even when I laugh there is a tug, there's pulling. And also just the look of it, it's a big change."

Stargazers around the UK were treated to the vivid colours of the aurora borealis on Saturday night.
As cloud and rain on the weather front cleared southwards, parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland were perfectly placed to catch the display.
The eerie glow provided a fitting finale to spookiest night of the year, delighting skywatchers and photographers alike.
Aurora activity may continue into Sunday night, especially in northern skies, but the display is likely to be less intense than the one seen on Halloween night.

Rioters looted shops in central Frankfurt late on Saturday as clashes erupted in German cities over the cost of living.
Besides Frankfurt - Germany's financial hub - there were incidents of violence in Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, with police saying they used water cannons to disperse protesters who were targeting emergency workers with fireworks, stones and bottles. Officials said the windows of a gun shop were smashed and that they had seized two weapons after arresting a suspect. People also broke into other shops, stealing items like trainers.

In any reasonable country, Jeffrey George Ewert would have been in jail for the rest of his life. But this is Canada weâre talking about, and theyâre anything but reasonable. Now, the elderly killer and woman-abuser is attending one of the countryâs most woke universities and â youâll never believe this â the same kind of wokeistas who want to abolish prisons donât want to be in the same place as a high-risk offender. Ewert, now in his 60s, sexually assaulted and strangled a woman to death back in 1984 in British Columbia. Six weeks after that murder, he beat and choked a 15-year-old, paralyzing her for life.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation noted that he was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted murder for the attacks. He was granted day parole in 2025 even though his risk of reoffending was judged to be moderate to high. Heâs currently in a halfway house â and since August has been attending law school and pursuing a masterâs in social work at McGill University in Montreal, one of the most prestigious, and liberal, institutions in Canada. In October, after some students felt betrayed that the school did not disclose his violent history and said they felt unsafe in his presence, the university took âmeasured, decisive actionâ and banned Ewert from campus. Now, woke students are petitioning the school to return him to campus. Why? Because they claim the school is perpetuating racism by banning the indigenous Ewert despite the fact heâs a convicted murderer, sexual abuser, and woman-beater. Johnson-Brown said that while women might feel uncomfortable sitting near a sexual abuser and murderer, âdiscomfort is not the same as a lack of safety.â

The Viking Genes study showed that people in the Western Isles have a one in 62 chance of inheriting the faulty genes compared to one in over 200 across the UK.
Torcuil Crichton MP, who inherited the condition, said mass screening âcould be a game changer for health in the Western Islesâ.
"Iâm really glad NHS Western Isles have offered Professor Wilson this opportunity to speak to staff. it shows how seriously they take predictive and preventive health care,â he added. "The next challenge is to raise enough funds to offer community-wide testing so that people can be made aware of the conditions and whether they carry the determining gene.â
While the ÂŁ1 million target is ambitious in the current climate, the results would be of huge benefit to current and future generations in better understanding the condition. Shetland has already raised ÂŁ200,000 towards a similar programme.

THERE are a few things you never see in Tiree. Bats, wasps, second home owners after Halloween, and umbrellas. The wind is merciless, but the mockery were you to attempt to use one would be substantially worse.
This weekend, we were in for some quite impressive windspeeds. Having spent time over the last few months Âdemolishing roofs and generating piles of debris, Thursday and Friday were my chance to make sure everything was Âsafely secured. By Friday night, with some help, the skip was full, covered, and the tractor loader arms had been left aloft â Âweighing the whole lot down. Boats were out of the Âwater, and sheep had been moved to Âshelter. Empty buckets had been rounded up, and all the feeding Iâll need from the shipping container had been decanted into smaller bags and placed in the shed. A heavy steel door flapping in a gale risks amputation of something, and after a brush with a hefty dose of antibiotics last week following a dipping related Âinjury (I was bitten by a sheep â donât ask), I had no Âdesire to visit the surgery again so soon. Iâd got an extra bucket of coal in so I didnât have to spend more time outside than I needed to, and Iâd been to the Co-op. Everyone else had been to the Co-op too. A single bottle of milk sat on its Âlonesome. Even the steaks were cleared out, and the mountain of Tennent's by the till had quite the dent in it. These are not unusual actions. High wind speeds may be the stuff of headlines and weather warnings when they affect the mainland, but here they are a fact of life. Island-only gales are rarely graced with a name, though. Since it also affects the mainland, this one has been named Storm Boelo, with an amber warning across much of Scotland from last night, and gusts of up to 80mph forecast on Âexposed coasts.

I hate the whole hate speech bullshit thing but I want to see this grifting besom stopped once and for all.
A derogatory âreviewâ of a popular Stornoway coffee shop has been removed by the travel website TripAdvisor as it was found to be in breach of its âhate speechâ rules.â It was posted by Claire Kellerman, the American woman who has been enmeshed in disputes with multiple local businesses and charities over her insistence that she is entitled to take her dog onto their premises. Ms Kellerman has won notoriety for her action against Bernera Community Association which runs the cafĂŠ in the community centre which she is trying to sue for ÂŁ10,000.
Jayne Macritchie, owner of the highly-regarded Blue Lobster CafĂŠ, was one of the few business owners who spoke out about Ms Kellermanâs behaviour following persistent efforts to enter the premises with her dog. Ms Kellerman has also taken to Instagram, using one of her aliases, to attack those from around the world who contributed to a fund which will allow Bernera Community Association to defend itself against her legal action and also secure its future. According to Ms Kellerman, âa tiny isle has scammed the public for over ÂŁ200,000/$233,000â through a âcampaign of hatred, torment and racismâ. The Berenera Community CafĂŠ, she maintains in ârun by unethical peopleâ.
Legal arguments around the process of her case are due to be called at Stornoway Sheriff Court in late February.

đą 𤌠not heard anything on the grapevine yet but I will likely know who this is. This BT bullshit is madness.
A communications blackout on the island of Berneray left one resident having to walk to a neighbour to raise the alarm that she was having a heart attack. âLast week the local community council wrote to the Gazette over the on-going issues, after becoming increasingly frustrated that nothing was being done, by either EE, the main mobile phone provider, or BT, responsible for internet connections through their Openreach partners. The issue is further exacerbated by the switch over from analogue to digital for landlines, meaning for many in Berneray they have effectively been completely cut off. This week community council chair Margaret Macaskill shared more of the problems that have arisen, which range from people being unable to work from home to major health scares.
They have also become increasingly frustrated over being unable to contact someone to get services restored. âHow are you supposed to report a fault when you've got no internet, no mobile and no landline?â she said. Speaking in the House of Commons on Tuesday the MP for Na h-Eileanan an Iar Torcuil Crichton called on the Security Minister, Dan Jarvis MP, to get the private companies to âup their digital gameâ.

Nicola Sturgeon's reputation lies in tatters after new polling suggested a majority of Scots do not believe she had absolutely no knowledge of Peter Murrell's crimes. The former first minister has always insisted she was oblivious to her ex-husband's offending. It comes as Police Scotland was forced to deny it had reopened a probe into SNP finances. The force is under pressure to look again at the use of money raised by party members, seemingly to fight a second independence referendum.
Wings Over Scotland blogger Stuart Campbell has launched legal action against the national force for failing to reopen the investigation after getting a legal opinion from Roddy Dunlop KC, Dean of the Faculty of Advocates.

Members of the public were attacked with fireworks on Hallowe'en as police prepare for their biggest operation since Donald Trump's visit last year. Police Scotland said it received 144 firework-related calls on Saturday. Incidents were reported in Glasgow, as well as Tranent in East Lothian and Bonnyrigg in Midlothian, with fireworks lit in the street and thrown at passers-by. A house party in the Ratho area of Edinburgh also sparked a police response, although it was not related to fireworks. "Sadly, however, we have again experienced incidents of fireworks used as projectiles at buildings, vehicles and members of the public. I will say again, this type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and has to stop before there are serious consequences. November 5 has been marred by violence in recent years, with hotspots in Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as towns in West Dunbartonshire and West Lothian. Protests are also expected to take place on the day while Celtic's Europa League tie with Besiktas adds another layer of difficulty for the force.

SNP Ministers have been slammed after suggesting that taking drugs was a "part of adolescent development" in new guidance for schools. The Scottish Government issued the 'responding to substance' advice for schools this week.
But a leading drug campaigner has suggested some of the language used is "ill-judged" and risks creating an impression that taking illegal substances is "an expected stage of growing up". The document sets out steps for schools to take to deal with drug taking among students.
"I think this is deeply ill-judged wording. Drug use should never be presented to children as an expected stage of growing up. Adolescents take risks.
"That is precisely why adults have a responsibility to provide clear boundaries, honest information and protection. 'They experiment' is an explanation of behaviour, not a good enough starting point for government guidance on substances.

Several people who grew up with Arday allege he was never, in fact, non-verbal. âI lived next door [to him] for 24 years from when he was born⌠he spoke all the time,â says a childhood neighbour. She did not wish to be named but is of a similar age to Arday, who became Cambridgeâs youngest-ever black professor in 2023. âHe was quiet but he still spoke and he played with us,â the former neighbour says. âI used to have conversations with him every day.â Fellow pupils at Heathbrook Primary School in Nine Elms, south-west London, which Arday attended from the age of four to 11 between 1989 and 1996, also contest this claim. Nadia Elawahabi, 42, was in the year above Arday and in the same class as Joseph, one of his brothers. âWe had children who couldnât speak English in our class at that time,â she says, and everybody knew who they were. âThere was nothing like [a mute pupil]. It would have stood out.â
Another student from Ardayâs year, who did not wish to be named, recalls speaking to him directly. âI know he definitely wasnât mute,â he says. However âhe was quiet, quiet in himself⌠[in fact] the whole family kept to themselvesâ. Yet far from being a silent, struggling child who was considered an academic lost cause, this schoolfriend remembers him as âwell-mannered⌠intelligent and politeâ. In his memoir, which is due to be published in the UK later this month, Arday also claims that he was âalways put in bottom setâ as he was illiterate. The schoolfriend counters this. âI donât think thatâs true at all,â he says. âI know full well because I was in the [bottom] class.â

After the boy pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at Bristol Crown Court last week, Judge Ian Lawrie KC handed him a 12-month referral order and a three-year restraining order. In other words, after coming within inches of killing a girl, the knife-wielding adolescent will not spend any time in custody following his sentence. Indeed, the judge seemed determined to ensure the boyâs release. The perpetrator was initially held in a secure facility after admitting the attack to the police. But at the sentencing, the judge said he was âdeeply unhappyâ about this spell in detention. âMy own view is custody is the last place you should beâ, Lawrie explained. âWhat Iâm trying to do is find a sentence thatâs best constructed to help you and give you support.â He even referred to the perpetrator as âa bright ladâ. After explaining that the boy should not contact the victim again, the judge stressed that he ought to âkeep out of mischiefâ.
This extraordinarily lenient sentence has since caused understandable uproar. After all, this was a premeditated stabbing, not mere âmischiefâ as the judge characterised it. It is surely not far-fetched to suggest this boy poses a threat to the public. Of course, a child who so viciously attacks another clearly needs âsupportâ of some kind. But for the justice system to focus wholly on rehabilitation over reprimand feels woefully inadequate given the severity of the crime and the extent of the victimâs suffering. âIâm scared and nervous anywhere that I goâ, she said in her victim-impact statement: âEven if someone puts their hand up next to me, I flinch as I donât know what they are about to do to me⌠Iâve been having nightmares since; I relive the incident⌠I canât stop thinking about it.â

A teenage girl who was raped by a trans-identified male former police officer in Germany faced questioning from his lawyer after âaccidentally misgenderingâ him in court. The disturbing new detail emerges just weeks after Maja Schmid, a 55-year-old former federal officer from Rosenheim, was sentenced for the heinous crime. As previously reported by Reduxx, Schmid was sentenced to three years and three months at the Traunstein Regional Court earlier in October after a three day trial. Schmid was found guilty of raping the girl when she was just 15 years old. He was also found guilty of possessing child sexual abuse materials. During the trial, it was learned that the crime occurred in August of 2025 during a roadtrip between Schmid and the young girl, who was the daughter of one of Schmidâs friends. After stopping at a roadside restaurant, Schmid approached the girl in the womenâs toilets, pushed her against a wall, and raped her. According to reports, the teenage victim was in shock after the assault, unable to respond until Schmid left the area, at which point the girl had a âserious anxiety attackâ in the bathroom.
It was also learned that at the time of the assault, Schmid was already under investigation by cybercrime specialists for possessing extreme pornography on his phone. After seizing his devices during the course of the investigation, police found thousands of child sex abuse images, some of which depicting toddlers, along with a video of Schmid sexually abusing a dog. The bestiality media was not taken into consideration in the verdict. According to the presiding judge, bestiality pornography is punishable in Germany only if it is intended for distribution.

https://unherd.com/2026/10/a-halloween-ghost-story/
In modern Ireland, as the writer Alexander Poots notes, what is most remarkable to English eyes is âchiefly the matter-of-fact way in which the supernatural is discussedâ, a diminution of the spectral realm to that of minor inconvenience. At one family party, for example, I was told the story of an otherwise no-nonsense in-law bothered by a ghost that kept pulling the bedcovers off in the early hours of the morning. His eventual response, shouting out âWill ye piss away off ye wee ghostie, Iâm trying to get some sleep hereâ, was apparently successful in quietening the unquiet dead. What made the story worth sharing was the Ulster-Scots-tinged homeliness of his Antrim dialect, amusing to Belfast ears: the role of the ghost itself was assumed as an unexceptional domestic irritant.
But do I believe in ghosts? It would be difficult to maintain the pose of a dispassionate and level-headed observer of human foibles and say yes. But even still, I have my own story I can and do bring out when the wind and rain lashes against the windows in the dark winter, and the conversation around the fireside turns, as it inevitably does, to such unknowable matters.

The number of women having their breasts removed on the NHS because they identify as trans men is surging, figures show. The health service performed 1,115 of the operations in 2024-25, a 52 per cent increase on the 734 trans mastectomies carried out in 2022-23. NHS England estimates each procedure costs ÂŁ5,800 meaning that taxpayers are footing a bill of up to ÂŁ6.5m a year. Gender-critical activists have called for a halt to the operations, saying there is evidence of harm but little proof of benefit and that they will be âlooked back on with the same sort of horror as lobotomiesâ. An official review of adult gender clinics found that the âmajorityâ of the patients using the services were between 18 and 25, many with autism or mental health problems.
Several people who have âdetransitionedâ have spoken publicly about their regret at rushing to have irreversible surgery, the resulting pain and in some cases an inability to breastfeed their children. Data obtained using freedom of information laws show for the first time a steep rise in âmasculinising chest surgeryâ operations: 734 in 2022-23, 904 in 2023-24, 1,115 in 2024-25 and 933 in 2025-26. Masculinising genital surgery â or creating an artificial penis â has also run at hundreds a year. There were 270 in 2022-23, 357 in 2023-24, 241 in 2024-25 and 322 in 2025-26. The procedure, known as âbottom surgeryâ, costs an average of ÂŁ32,000 per patient, NHS figures show. During the same period, âfeminising genital surgeryâ â creating an artificial vagina in a procedure that costs about ÂŁ10,000 â has fallen slightly from 420 in 2022-23, 414 in 2023-24, 380 in 2024-25 and 364 in 2025-26.

ÂŁ100,000 devastation as thieves target agricultural business
Thieves have caused more than ÂŁ100,000 in estimated losses and damage after stealing a JCB telehandler and stripping copper from premises linked to an agricultural manufacturer in County Antrim. The raid at Cullybackey, near Ballymena, left buildings and machinery extensively damaged, disrupting plans to expand the business.

A yellow JCB 530-70 telehandler, valued at approximately ÂŁ15,000, was also stolen alongside industrial welding equipment and other machinery. The property owner has warned farmers and rural businesses to remain vigilant, describing the scale of the destruction as shocking.

Dozens of asylum seekers may be housed in a former student halls in Dundee city centre before it is converted into private housing, the Scottish Daily Express can exclusively reveal. Mears owns Tay Works, which is a historic A-listed former mill building, and have applied to turn it from student accommodation to apartments for sale. A listed building consent application has been lodged with Dundee City Council to transform the four and five-storey mill into 140 private flats. If approved, it will pave the way for a full planning application for the proposed redevelopment.
Mears runs asylum seeker accommodation for the Home Office and previously ruled out housing refugees at Tay Works. However, it refused to rule it out when questioned directly by the Scottish Daily Express, instead saying it was exploring a "range of options" for the building before its conversion.

Amanda Lindsay MSP has called for a "clear public debate" on the issue, saying MSPs should be doing everything they can to support the sector. She said: "Scotlandâs pubs have been integral to community life for generations â welcoming places where people meet, talk and feel they belong. "When an elected member states that pubs are not designed for certain religious minorities, the public is entitled to ask what this means for the future of these shared spaces. We should be able to discuss the role of pubs in Scottish society openly and without apology. Our traditional community venues are worth defending."

Brahim Aouissaoui, the Tunisian illegal migrant convicted of murdering three people in the 2020 Islamist terrorist attack at Notre-Dame Basilica in Nice, France, has appealed his life sentence. On October 29, 2020, Aouissaoui entered the basilica armed with a knife and murdered three worshippers and church workers.
His victims were:
⢠Nadine Vincent, 60, who was nearly decapitated.
⢠Simone Barreto Silva, 44, a Franco-Brazilian mother who was stabbed 24 times and died after escaping the church.
⢠Vincent Loquès, 55, the church sacristan and father of two daughters, whose throat was slit.
Born in Tunisia in 1999, Aouissaoui entered Europe illegally by boat, arriving on the Italian island of Lampedusa on September 20, 2020. Despite receiving an order to leave Italy, he traveled through the country and reached Nice on October 27, just two days before the massacre. During his trial in Paris in February 2025, he admitted committing the murders but declared:
"I am not a terrorist, I am a Muslim."
He justified the killings as revenge for Muslims killed by the West, arguing that revenge was a right. When questioned about decapitating a woman, he described beheading as a symbolic act intended to frighten people. On February 26, 2025, a special criminal court in Paris sentenced him to life imprisonment with an irreducible minimum term, France's harshest criminal punishment. Judges cited his extreme dangerousness, lack of remorse, and continued risk of committing further violence. Six years after the massacre, his conviction is now being challenged on appeal.

Despite the terror group live streaming the atrocity on GoPros, he also said we 'haven't seen conclusive proof that Hamas actually ordered its fighters to kill civilians'.

A woman has shared her disappointment and frustration about the decision not to review her rapist's sentence.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was attacked when she was 17 by fellow student Thomas Woodall on her first night at a Gloucestershire college. Her attacker, now 19, was found guilty of rape and sentenced to three years in custody suspended for two years and given 200 hours of unpaid work.
"I've been let down. He's got such a lenient sentence whilst I have a life sentence," she said.
But despite the outcome, the woman said sharing her story "brought more closure than when he was found guilty" - and she encouraged survivors of sexual violence to report to police.
Woodall was convicted of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault following a trial at Gloucester Crown Court in August. He was acquitted of one count of oral rape.

Samhain Treats: Rowan Berry Honey Caramels
A berry, a berry, a red rowan berry,
A red rowan berry brought me beauty and love.
The Story of the Fairy Rowan Tree
Folklorist Ruth Kelly, in her Book Of Halloweâen, tells us this was the time the gates of the Fairy Palaces (burial mounds and Neolithic passage tombs) opened and throngs of spirits emerged to roam the country. Kelly writesââŚmilk was poured on graves feasts and candles set out on tables and fires lighted on the hearths to welcome the spirits of departed kinsfolk. Hungry ghosts being hangry were especially feared, and so to prevent that from happening, visiting dead were properly satiated with plenty of milk, honey, apples, berries, and nuts, not to mention cakes or sweet treats baked or toasted over a fire of rowan.
It was traditional to offer a portion of the feast to the dead before the living tucked in and today these food practices have been absorbed into the Christian holidays All Saints Day and All Souls Day. In Ireland, that means feasting on apple cakes and Barmbrack ( a kind of fruit cake), and in Brittany, the âGouel an Anaon,â the Feast of Souls, included milk, pancakes, and apple cider. In Spain, it was customary to bake pannelets (small cakes covered in nuts or filled with fruits) and gather around a fire and roast chestnuts to welcome back the deceased members of the family.

So this week has seen two events of huge significance to Jewish people stolen and used against them as vehicles for antisemitism. As veterans of such cultural hijacking ourselves, do we Terfs have anything useful to offer British Jews? I think there are a few things. First and foremost, we can offer our solidarity. Secondly, I think our direct experience and understanding makes us well-placed to help expose this topsy-turvy world of malign inversions to the light. And thirdly, it may be helpful to remember the success of our own battles. We no longer have men heading up Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre or Endometriosis South Coast. The meaning of âwomanâ was upheld in the Supreme Court. While the war is far from over, history is showing that attempts to hijack reality will not prevail.
https://www.terftimes.com/p/vapid-bourgeois-feminism/
The groups involved included Sisters Uncut, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, Women Against the Far Right and NASUWT Scotland (the teachersâ union). Of course, all these organisations are resolutely trans-inclusive, i.e. they canât define what a woman is. Always a great start for an alleged womenâs rights protest. Indeed, Scottish Green MSP Iris Duane, a trans-identified male, was one of the speakers to take the mic. Itâs quite difficult to pinpoint lowlights in a speech with no highlights, but a particularly telling moment came when he said: â[Extremists are] telling us to blame migrants, the refugees, the trans people â anyone who looks different â and blame anything but the structures that have permitted this.â* Ah yes, structures. Structures are to blame for killing and raping us. If I found myself walking alone in Gorgie late at night, Iâd be looking over my shoulder to check whether structures were following me. Iâd cross the street to avoid walking past a group of structures. The political left has a strange relationship with describing men. Men they call âcisâ and, by extension, traditional masculinity are often mocked and demonised as the cause of all societyâs problems. Yet when it comes to the uncomfortable nitty-gritty of identifying and actually solving problems, particularly those relating to MVAGW, under no circumstances can groups of males be spoken about in specific terms.
Many of the other speeches then became exercises in disingenuousness. It is not migrants as a whole who are being singled out for being overrepresented in sex-crime statistics, just as it is not trans people as a whole who are being framed as potential threats in female single-sex spaces. It is the males within both groups who are being accurately identified as the source of this particular threat to womenâs safety and spaces. Acknowledging this is not to downplay the threat posed by non-migrant men or by men who do not identify as women. All men who harm women and children, regardless of their background, deserve the full force of the law and societyâs condemnation.

The British Medical Association is the latest union to reject the EHRC guidance on single-sex spaces, with the release yesterday of a statement expressing âdeep concernâ on the implications for people identifying trans and non-binary.
The UKâs premier trade union and professional body for doctors states that the guidance does not mitigate its concerns over âequitable treatmentâ, and alleges âpotential devastating repercussionsâ on trans patientsâ access to healthcare. The chief harm identified by the BMA include the expectation that doctors may have to reveal patientsâ âgender historyâ â in other words, their true sex. The BMAâs statement is only the latest sally in its relentless and longstanding alliance with the trans activist movement. Famously, in 2024 the union rejected the findings of the Cass Review, and then instigated a âwitch-huntâ to identify who leaked its opposition to the media. These actions caused uproar among its members, with around 1,000 senior doctors writing an open letter expressing their âextreme disappointmentâ with the unionâs stance.
One leading doctor, Jacky Davis, described the unionâs stance as âirrationalâ and said that it had created a âfractureâ between its leadership and the doctors it claims to represent.
An Oxford University college has been accused of neglecting the welfare of its female students by allowing a male lecturer to teach while wearing large prosthetic breasts. St Hildaâs College has received complaints about Matt Rattley, a lecturer in biochemistry, but has cited the need to âprotect and promote freedom of expressionâ. Bearded Mr Rattley often posts pictures of himself at work on social media, wearing low-cut tops, red lipstick and nail varnish. Michael Biggs, professor of sociology at Oxford, said he feared that individual students were âwary of complainingâ and that it was the collegeâs responsibility to represent their interests. St Hildaâs, which was founded in 1893 and until 2008 admitted only female students, has produced alumni including the novelist Val McDermid, politicians Baroness Kramer and Baroness Shephard and the broadcaster Zeinab Badawi.
Dame Sarah Springman, the collegeâs principal, received a letter from three female former Oxford students earlier this year, urging her to âtake immediate actionâ. Janet Murray, a journalist and Telegraph contributor, was contacted by some of the complainants, who told her that the college responded by saying: âSt Hildaâs College takes seriously the duty to protect and promote freedom of expression within the law.â One complainant wrote to Prof Springman describing Mr Rattleyâs behaviour as âegregious, arguably perverted and I would argue constitutes sexual harassment of his studentsâ under college rules.

A man wielding a knife has been pictured threatening migrants before boarding a dinghy headed to the UK. Dramatic footage shows the man moving towards a dinghy in waist-deep water while holding the knife off the coast of Hardelot in France. A man on board tries to hit him with a boot and the man in the water draws his arm back, seemingly dropping the knife into the sea. Moments later, he is seen boarding the boat. A call of "I will kill you" was heard as French rescue boats hovered in the background just a short distance away.
Iraqi Kurds are believed to be key players in Channel dinghy crossings. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said on X: "We now have gangs painting the boats their national colours. They are taking the p*.
Why am I thinking of Eric idleâs memorable advice in an emergency? : â If you are currently attempting to escape while picking pieces of hot shrapnel from your body, please observe the following regulatory guidelines: First: Try to pick the shrapnel out in a calm, rhythmic fashion. Ideally to the tempo of a light jazz waltz. Panicking and pulling wildly only causes unnecessary tearing to the upholstery, which is not covered by your budget fare
Second: If a piece of metal is glowing an exceptionally bright orange, do not touch it with your bare fingers. Use the complimentary plastic shrimp fork from your inflight meal tray to pry it loose
Third: Please remember that any shrapnel removed inside the cabin remains the sole property of the airline. If you wish to keep a piece of hot fuselage as a souvenir of your survival, a nominal ÂŁ45 extraction fee will be charged to your credit card at the forward exit
The government does seem vague about the threat(s) they anticipate. FWIW I reckon their main immediate concern is the electrical grid, currently creaking at the seams. At times it has already been run for a while beyond its design limits, and if a part failed then rerouting power might cause a cascade of failures. It then takes weeks, in theory anything up to two years, for a substation to be repaired. Knowing this country, that would require parts no longer manufactured in the UK, and not stockpiled in sufficient quantity if at all

To galvanize the nation, Labourâs posable action figure Al Carns has made a video urging us all to âbe ready for an emergencyâ, but he, too, is eerily silent on what exactly that means. The bathetic chasm between jumpy headlines and strangely repressed instructions â buy in a bit of bottled water and tinned food, write down a few phone numbers, order medication in good time â is also jarring. Should the National Grid fail, then so will every refrigeration unit, food production line, and water treatment plant in the country. The difference between dying of thirst immediately and doing so three days later seems somewhat academic; and the same goes for eking out small amounts of food and meds. Are we really supposed to be facing down the apocalypse with half a big shop each? Whatever the Government pretends, transplanted into our relatively small-scale, close-knit setting, the notion that a household could be âemergency readyâ on its own is obviously fantastical. When it comes to national disasters, there can be no substitute for a shock-proofed state to manage the response.

Concerns have been raised about the "close relationship" between civil servants and the Lord Advocate as calls to split up the role strengthened. The dual job is the subject of a Westminster Scottish Affairs Committee probe which begins next Wednesday, with legal experts set to give evidence. A call for evidence was made last month, and former SNP MP and KC Joanna Cherry submitted a scathing statement about the risks of keeping the role together. Currently, the Lord Advocate is the head of the independent prosecution service as well as sitting in the Scottish Government Cabinet as its legal adviser. It led to farcical scenes where Dorothy Bain sat beside Nicola Sturgeon while her prosecutors investigated her over Operation Branchform. This situation, alongside the botched Alex Salmond misconduct probe, was presented as why the job should be split in two. The UK Government must pass legislation in order to do this, with John Swinney ordering yet another independent review of the Lord Advocate role last month. The last one, published this year, led to no changes being made despite concerns being raised about Ms Bain privately updating John Swinney about the Peter Murrell case before the details had been made public.
Ms Cherry wrote that the Lord Advocate role must be broken up due to public concerns that there is a "conflict of interest" or "bias" in the decisions involving high-profile cases with a political aspect. She added that there is "too close a relationship" between civil servants and prosecutors. In her evidence to the Scottish Affairs committee, she highlighted that "events surrounding the prosecutions of Alex Salmond and Peter Murrell have led me to question whether everyone within the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service is acting independently of government."

The SNP government has been handed a rare legal victory after a court ruled the Scottish Information Commissioner âerred in lawâ when he ordered ministers to disclose exempted material relating to the so-called Salmond files. Information Commissioner David Hamilton had told Scottish Government ministers to release information relating to the Hamilton Inquiry â a probe launched by then first minister Nicola Sturgeon into whether she had breached the ministerial code in relation to the Holyrood inquiry into her predecessor Alex Salmond.

SNP MSP David Linden has been slated after calling out a Debate Night audience member and suggesting she was a racist, due to her airing concerns about immigration. The Glasgow Shettleston and Baillieston MSP shut down discussions about concerns being raised about mass migration into Scotland. Appearing on the BBC, he got into a heated discussion with a woman in the audience who highlighted that "research and public polling suggest Scottish attitudes towards immigration have changed. But when political leaders dismiss local anxieties as toxic or racist, does this alienate ordinary Scots?" In response to this, he suggested that she was a racist. He claimed that those coming to the UK was a "last resort" and that's why they were risking their lives on boats. He said: "I don't want anybody arriving on boats. I want them to come here legally and do it through proper channels. I think when we have this discussion, there's a lot to this.
This enraged the audience member who pointed out that she knew people who struggled to get GP appointments, and her mum died after her doctors failed to properly assess her, while immigrants go to the front of the queue for appointments, housing, etc. "He called her racist, racist for daring to raise concerns. That's what the SNP think of working class people across Scotland who are raising their concerns about mass migration that is pushing our country to breaking point. David Linden represents the east end of Glasgow. As I say, that's somewhere I know really, really well, having grown up there and staying there myself.

Arab migrants are systematically targeting gay men in Offenbach, Western Germany, beating them until they require hospitalization.
At least seven victims were lured through dating apps to secluded meeting spots. Instead of meeting their date, they were ambushed by groups of masked attackers who used pepper spray and beat them so severely that several required hospital treatment. In at least five cases, victims described the attackers as young men aged 15 to 20 of Arab or Middle Eastern appearance. Investigators are examining whether the attacks were motivated by anti-gay hatred and whether an Islamist motive may have played a role. đ
One 21-year-old victim said he arranged a meeting through a dating app before being surrounded by several masked men. He was held down, sprayed with pepper spray, and repeatedly punched and kicked. A passer by eventually called an ambulance. Police say the attacks followed a similar pattern and are continuing to investigate whether the same group was responsible for all of them.

A police investigation into a man who sexually abused his wife was sparked after he put extreme pornographic images online, a court has heard. Philip Young, a former Tory councillor for Swindon, has admitted to drugging and raping his now ex-wife Joanne over a 13-year period. Four men who Young is alleged to have recruited to abuse his wife at their home are now on trial. Prosecuting, Sarah Jones KC told Winchester Crown Court that "intimate" images of Joanne taken without her consent were found on Young's phone after he handed it over to Wiltshire Police.

Men jailed for 'abhorrent' operation trafficking women from Europe into UK for sex work
The "architect and organiser" of a group that trafficked Romanian women into the UK to become sex workers has been sentenced to eight years and two months in prison. George Filip, 45, led an organised crime group responsible for the "prostitution" of at least 16 victims, earning hundreds of thousands of pounds, Cardiff Crown Court heard. He was assisted by his wife Ionela Filip, 35, to bring the women to work as prostitutes in locations across Wales, England and Scotland. Alexandru Moco, 27 and Leonard Banica, 41, were also involved in the conspiracy.
Judge Francis said it was a "substantial and sophisticated criminal enterprise that operated over seven years". The court heard that between June 2015 and October 2022, at least 16 identifiable victims had been brought to the UK from Romania and France to work in the sex industry. Matthew Cobbe, prosecuting, said the operation was of a "significant scale" with women working in "Cwmbran, Hereford, a location near Alton Towers, Stoke-on-Trent, Aberdeen and Inverness". Francis was told the women had not been brought under duress but George, of no fixed abode, had "plainly exploited the circumstances of these victims". Although there was "no suggestion of sexual violence" there were "very many customers", Cobbe said.

An 83-year-old recovering cancer patient who has suffered two heart attacks was forced to drive himself on a four-hour round trip for medical tests. Charles Swift was referred to Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, for tests on his heart in August - he lives in Borth, Ceredigion - which is 70 miles away. He made inquiries about getting non-emergency transport but was refused by a call handler from the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust (WAST) when he told them he owned a car.
"I can't understand why pensioners have to run about in their own car," he said.
WAST said it was not always able to meet the increasing demand for transport, and changes were underway to improve the service. Swift, who has been treated for three types of cancer and has had two heart attacks, said when he rang hospital taxis, he was asked if he could walk, climb stairs and owned a car.
When he replied yes to all three, he said he was told: "You'll have to use that then.

Red rainbows form in the same way, but appear at sunrise or sunset when the sun is low in the sky.
At these times, sunlight travels through more of the atmosphere.

Barlow explained: "It is wonderful to see a golden eagle hatch, fledge and fly freely from the newly-established nest of a translocated golden eagle that has made its home on a managed grouse moor in the Southern Uplands.
"This reflects the incredible support we have had from landowners and gamekeepers â from translocations in the Highlands, to continued monitoring and protection of birds and eyries on their lands and estates.
"Indeed their support has been absolutely vital to our success in restoring the population of golden eagles to record numbers."
She said the fledging of five chicks from the nests of birds they had translocated to southern Scotland was a "hugely significant milestone".
Barlow added that it gave "genuine hope" in the battle to reverse biodiversity decline and ensure future generations across Scotland, England and Wales could experience the "incredible sense of awe" when seeing a golden eagle.

Detectives in Scotland have joined international law enforcement in targeting online gangs which groom and coerce children into acts of self-harm.
Officers are hunting members of loose online networks of sadists known as "The Com", which mainly targets girls on gaming platforms and social media.
The groups, mostly comprised of teenage and young adult males, have risen in prominence in recent years after cases involving sextortion and hacking, as well as self-harm encouragement.
So far, there has been one arrest in Scotland, while there have been a handful of convictions in England.
The Molly Rose Foundation - a suicide prevention charity helping young people and families victimised by the network - said the groups "represent the gravest risk to children online".
29 men convicted in connection with the sexual exploitation of a 13-year-old girl in West Yorkshire.
Twenty-nine men. One child.
The scale of the abuse is horrifying. No child should ever have to endure such cruelty, and no victim should be failed by the institutions responsible for protecting them. How many more children must suffer before we demand real accountability? Those who commit these appalling crimes must face justice, and any failures by police, social services or other authorities must be thoroughly investigated. Protecting children must come before political sensitivities, institutional reputations or fear of controversy.
Anyone convicted of these crimes deserves the full consequences of the law. Where offenders are foreign nationals, deportation should be considered wherever legally permitted, following due process. Our first duty is to protect children, secure justice for victims and ensure that those responsible are held accountableâwithout fear or favour.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10/30/social-worker-removed-from-case0/
A social worker has claimed he was stripped of his role as a familyâs guardian after he refused to use âthey/themâ pronouns in official records. Charles Plummer, a former family court adviser and social worker at the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), said he had been removed from the position after a school and authority complained about how he had referred to a child in a case. He said he had always used the childâs preferred pronouns in person, but used âshe/herâ â rather than they/them â in written reports, because using the non-binary alternatives had made safeguarding documents âincomprehensibleâ.
Mr Plummer, who resigned from Cafcass earlier this year, said: âProfessional practice within child safeguarding requires clear, precise and non-ideological language.â He said he had spoken to the childâs mother about it and that she had always been âentirely accepting of this and understood my reasoningâ. Mr Plummer, from Bath, is taking action against Cafcass alongside Bayswater Support Group and an anonymous third claimant to demand that the agency suspend its transgender guidance. Their pre-action letter, seen by The Telegraph, alleges that the guidance presents âcontested propositionsâ about gender identity âas though they represent settled professional practiceâ. The guidance does not acknowledge clinical, safeguarding or legal debates about transgender issues, the group claims. Cafcassâs official guidance tells staff to write reports using a transitioning childâs ânew name and pronounsâ to ânot invalidate the gender in which the child identifiesâ. The guidance says children âshould not be forced to pretend they are not transgender to please a parentâ.

Taliban forbids âun-Islamicâ sight-saving operations
Afghan doctors told they will no longer be able to perform corneal transplants
Hundreds of people each year will be denied sight-saving operations in Afghanistan after the Taliban forbade corneal transplants, doctors have told the Telegraph. Officials have ruled that the transplant procedure is not permitted under Islamic teachings and have ordered surgeons to halt operations. It is the latest in a stream of edicts limiting access to health care issued by the regime since it swept to power in 2021. The edict came just months after a medical charity had helped train up local doctors to conduct operations in the Afghan capital, Kabul, and the eastern city of Jalalabad. Doctors say there is a severe need for corneal transplants in Afghanistan to restore sight in patients injured in explosions and accidents.
