Both learned helplessness (Left side of the wheel) and compulsive behaviour (Right side of the wheel) are maladaptive outcomes of inescapable stress (The Wheel)
Both wreck your energy & health.

I couldn't tell people what I do
I've stepped back from email and social media for a while to go much deeper, both on myself and on the framework. I'm now calling it metabolic patterning: the five hamster wheels that we pass all information about our reality through, like a threat system. They shape how we behave, and they push us into inefficient energy production, which down the road becomes dysfunction and, at some point, disease.
I wanted to tell you about something that happened last night and how I used the work to get to the bottom of it.
I was at a party with my family and met some really interesting people. One guy asked me what I did for a living. The moment he asked, a thought came up. I didn't catch what it was at the time. I just started blathering on about hamster wheels and metabolic dysfunction and watched his eyes glaze over. Eventually I said, "Really, I just optimise clients," and that he understood. In the back of my mind I was thinking/ judging - “I didn’t do that properly”
As I was leaving, tired, the host asked me, "I never asked, what do you do?" Same thought. Same blather.
In the car with Sylvia I said, I need to look at this. I can't tell people what I do. And it isn't about memorising the perfect elevator pitch. Something deeper is blocking me. Frustration was bubbling inside of me.
So this morning I sat with it and went looking for the thought. What came up was: I'm not going to do this properly.
Then I looked for where else that thought lives. It was everywhere. The business. The garden. Research especially. I can spend a whole day researching and still feel I haven't done it properly.
Where did it come from? My parents wanted the best for me. They were in education, and what I heard a lot was: no, not like that, do it like this. What I learned was that I wasn't doing things properly. And when I did do something properly, I was called talented, which means you never had to work at it, you were just born with it. So the imprint was: I'm not good enough to do things properly. Homework was hugely distressing for that reason.
When you grow up on the left side of a hamster wheel, in learned helplessness ( a safety mechanism), : you desperately want to do things properly, but you believe you’re not able to. And the bar I'd set for "properly" (able) was perfection. You have to do it perfectly to have done it properly. Perfect is never possible. So I could never do anything properly. That's the loop… and the prison.
This is the bit that matters for you. The elevator pitch had nothing to do with remembering a line. Saying it triggered "you need to do this properly" and "you're not going to." That self-limiting belief is a program. Able and unable. I am unable to do things properly. That becomes the set point, and then, as always with this work, it literally becomes your reality. I think I can't do it properly, so get despondent, so I don't, then I get sidetracked because Im unable to continue as theres no point, and that reinforces it. I start researching biology, the thought arrives, I drift to something else, I try to go back, I'm not doing that properly either, I get frustrated and shut down and walk away. I could study for hours and it would never be enough, the thought is always Im not really doing it properly.
Seeing it is a huge relief, because it was tainting everything in my life. Over the next few days I'll just watch for it, but I know most of the power of that prison has gone. Moving the business forward isn't about doing it properly any more. It's about doing it how I want to do it, and enjoying it. Even writing this email I saw it, I wrote the word ‘safety’ (& just did it again) wrong. I heard the thought “you cant even write ‘safety’ properly. I smiled and understood that was little Rob’s program and I don’t need to run it. Dyslexia combined with suppressed energy production fed this “cant do things properly” like steroids. Creating a devastating loop. That loop is dissolving in real time and Im so grateful.
I'm sharing this because it's how important this work is for every human. If there's an area of your life you can't get moving, where you feel stuck or blocked, this is what you need to do. And I'll do it with you if you're interested. Working one on one and plotting it out on a whiteboard so you can see it clearly is what I love doing.
Most of the clearing happens on the call. Afterwards it's just reinforcement. It's the only real way I know to completely change your reality and get what you want out of life, and that's why I'm passionate about it.
So, I'm back writing. I hope everything is well on your end, and I'll talk to you soon.
Rob

Your Grey Hair Might Actually Come Back
I was watching Dr. Martin Picard, a mitochondrial researcher, on Diary of a CEO. He said something that caught me off guard: grey hair can return to its original colour without dye. When the stress underneath drops, the pigment starts coming back on its own.
Everyone wants their colour back, me included. But the bigger point is what it says about your body tracking your stress levels the whole time and responding to it. That leaves the real question: where’s the stress actually coming from, and how do you stop it from wearing you down?
It isn’t coming from your actual life. It comes from a pattern you treat as real without noticing you’re running it. Your mind spins it like a hamster wheel you never get off. Take the Right and Wrong one. On that wheel, being wrong doesn’t feel like a simple mistake. It registers as danger. So your body does the logical thing and dumps cortisol and adrenaline into your system.
Nothing outside is actually threatening you. The threat is old code running in the background that says being wrong equals unsafe. Your body can’t tell a real predator from that old pattern, so it just reacts to the signal.
Once you spot the wheel, everything shifts. Being wrong was never dangerous. The pattern just convinced you it was. The moment you catch it, the alarm cuts off because there’s nothing left to defend against. You don’t manage the stress. You see through it. That seeing is the switch. Get better at it and the wheels lose their hold and fade.
Why you miss the wheel
Seeing takes energy. When your body is wiped out, it has one priority: survival. Not inspection. So you end up in a loop where you need energy to notice the wheel, but noticing the wheel is what gives the energy back. You stay blind to what’s draining you, and the blindness keeps you drained.
The way out starts small. One bit of fuel or one clear look at a single pattern is enough. That energy buys you a moment of seeing. The seeing shuts off an alarm that was wasting fuel. Now you have a bit more energy for the next look. It becomes a flywheel going the other direction, building instead of draining.
Three simple ways to break in
Spot the wheel. The second you can name it and say “I’m on the Right and Wrong wheel,” you’ve already stepped off. The stress signal drops, and a pattern you’re watching can’t grab you as hard.
Feed the recovery. If you’re running on adrenaline, give your body materials to repair: warmth, light, real food with sugar and protein. A fed body has spare energy to look around. A starved one doesn’t.
Catch it early. There’s a short window before the hormones kick in and the wheel locks. Getting in there early costs way less than digging yourself out later.
Seeing is what actually fixes it
You don’t fight the pattern. You see it for what it is and it releases on its own. One wheel runs on a threat that was never real. It burns your energy for nothing and pulls you down. The other turns energy into seeing into more energy and lifts you up. The difference isn’t effort. It’s whether you can see.
Your grey hair was showing you how hard you were running. Your colour is ready to come back once you start spotting those wheels. If you want help catching them quicker, book a Zoom call with me.

worth a watch - fascinating guy and massive balls to take on scientific dogma

Two ways to be trapped.
Left siders of the hamster wheel, live in contraction. Frozen. Unable to expand into life, even when nothing is actually stopping them.
Right siders live in extension. Always having to be able. Never allowed to stop, never satisfied, always slightly in fight or flight.
Neither one is calm. Both are running the body on an inefficient fuel pathway, lactate instead of proper oxygen use, and it wrecks the metabolism over time either way.
Three ways to start reversing it.
Observe. Watch your thoughts and behaviour run without reacting to them. Just see the pattern. This is Admin Mode, the seat outside the wheel.
Check your body. Low temperature, low heart rate, that's a left side signal, look into thyroid and metabolic support, Ray Peat's work is the place to start. Running hot, wired, can't switch off, that's cortisol and adrenaline driving the right side.
Feel the contrast. Sit quietly. Bring to mind a moment you felt genuinely strong or at peace. Now bring up something that worries you, or the side of your wheel that troubles you most. Feel the difference for a moment, then go back to the peace. Repeat as many times as feels manageable.
Become aware of the contraction within you. (then feel the expansion)
Nothing here needs new equipment or a course. Pick one and try it today.
Freedom is waiting.

Great morning of research. Been focusing on serotonin elevation in the Unable / learned helplessness, the left side of the hamster wheel, compared to the adrenergic response to stress seen in right siders.
I get so excited by this building out of the framework and have to observe my tendency to switch levels and lose threads. But that's a natural part of grappling with a complex system.
Interestingly I was watching Steven Maier's Stress, Coping, Resilience and the Prefrontal Cortex presentation on YouTube and was surprised at how he kept mentioning how clever neuroscientists are. And how little awareness he had of that behaviour. 😜
I think his work is an important part of the puzzle. He'll probably create a drug for it eventually. But serotonin's effect on thyroid suppression and what that does to the energy system is going to be more actionable for people suffering right now. #peatstr #hamsterwheels #glitch

You can't fix the log by standing on it better.
The log is the problem.
The mind that created the struggle cannot solve the struggle. It can only spin faster, bakcwards or forwards, searching for safety.
The only move is out. Not better balance. Not more effort. Just seeing the whole thing from the shore.

I've spent my life being the helper.
Always the expert. Always achieving. Always doing, because somewhere along the way I learned that being useful was how you earned love.
I've realised I don't know what I actually enjoy.
I'm in that right now. And it's the most uncomfortable and honest place I've ever been. The drive has gone. Not dipped, gone. And I can't go back onto the wheel because I can finally see it for what it is. A fake life. The trade offs no longer work.
What I'm left with is an emptiness.
It feels so alien to not strive, not be constantly doing in order to be seen as special or to be someone.
I don't know what I enjoy and I now have to wait to feel what that actually feels like. A driven life without enjoyment is a prison, a hellish hamster wheel. It took me a while to see that truth and now I cannot unsee it.
Yesterday I danced to some old tracks by the pool. I went for a walk in the beautiful countryside which filled my senses so fully. Most of what I do right now is nothing.
I'm just fully present.
Maybe that's where it starts.

“Even in rich cultures, protein deficiency, inappropriate exercise, and emotional tension will contribute to premature aging of the individual, and damage to the offspring.” Ray Peat
In my work, I am always trying to put myself in my clients' shoes. I am of no special importance - I am simply here to point to something truly invaluable: a way of working with your mind that is completely different from how humans have operated for millennia.
One powerful shift you can make is what I call the "movie projector trick." It helps you realise that you happen to the world, rather than the world happening to you.Imagine you are watching a movie in the cinema and you notice a flickering hair on the screen.
You do not walk up to the screen and try to scrub it off. You realise it is just a projection, so you go back to the projector and inspect the film itself.
Once you find and clear the glitch in the film, you can settle back in and become lost in the movie again.Your reality works the same way.I recently had a client who was stuck in a frustrating cycle: no matter what he did, he always ended up making roughly the same amount of money.
He would launch new products, see a temporary bump in revenue, and then it would drop back to the previous level. When he described his situation, we went to the whiteboard and mapped it out, searching for the glitch - not in his business strategy, but in the "film" running in his mind.
A particular old movie was playing the same story about his business and money. Once we cleared that glitch, the movie changed. He later sent me a note saying his business was booming. Other areas of his life began to shift as well.
These "hamster wheel" programs that run in the background have their fingers in every part of our lives, and they do not like change. But the more you become aware of them and watch them, the more they dissolve - allowing the real you to come through.
If anything in this resonates and you would like to explore it further, feel free to get in touch.
Rob ♥️

Rob here. The Inner Circle is live.
If you've been sitting with your pattern -- the one that keeps showing up no matter how much you understand it -- this is the next step.
There are 10 Founding Member spots. That's not a device. It's the number I can actually work with at this level. When they're gone, the price goes up. The community stays open -- but the founding rate locks permanently for the people who took it.
What founding members get that nobody else will: The rate is locked for life. Everything lives in one app -- the live weekly sessions, the full Glitch video course, Q&A, the archive, and a community of people doing the actual work, not just reading about it. It's on your phone. It goes where you go.
The difference between this and reading the book: the book shows you the map. The community is where you navigate in real time, with other people who can see the wheel you're on when you can't.
If that's you, go here now: https://members.robbrinded.com/inner-circle
10 spots at this price. First in, permanently in at this rate.

I watched my daughter dance this morning.
She was spinning around the kitchen, lost in her own world. And there I was, physically present, but mentally, my mind had caught my attention.
One of my "hamster wheels" had caught my attention without me noticing. Some thought, some worry, some phantom urgency pulled me away from the only thing that actually mattered: my child, right in front of me.
This is what most of us don't understand about attention. You're not choosing where it goes. Old survival programmes are. They were built by a younger version of you trying to stay safe, and they've been running on autopilot ever since.
The result? We reach 50, 60, 80 and realize we spent our lives focused on things that weren't truly valuable to us.
Social media has made this worse. It's literally engineered to feed your hamster wheels.
Here's what actually works: Watch where your energy goes. Notice which wheel is spinning.
Understand that the programme is not you. It's a defense mechanism from a child who no longer needs it.
When you see it clearly, something shifts. The grip loosens.
And you come back. To the room. To the person in front of you. To your actual life.

Any situation in your life where you are not happy with the result is being run by an internal hamster wheel.
On that deepest level, the wheel programming is trying to keep you safe. Like a super sophisticated defence system.
Let's say you want more clients in your business and it's bothering you. When you go within, admin mode, and start to really watch the thoughts around the lack of clients… you will find one wheel that is really running the show.
You may feel unable to find new clients. Or feel scared you will be unable to pay the bills. The Able/Unable wheel.
Or you may think what you are doing is not good enough. The Right/Wrong wheel.
Could be simply the Gain/Loss wheel.
Or maybe underneath it all you are feeling unable because you need to get people to pay attention to you and that bothers you. The Attention/Ignore wheel. Deep down you don't feel "worth" it.
When you dig down to the deepest wheel, you know when you've found it because that wheel will elicit the most triggers, the most emotions.
This is the great art of watching and understanding your behaviours. Your wheels. The greatest life hack of them all.
I'm creating a course that explains this deeper so you can learn to do it for yourself. I'll keep you updated for when it's ready. Rob

What high performers refuse to look at...
I had a new client last week. High level business owner, smart, driven, on the ball.
I knew I had to be on top form because that's how they do things. Perfectionist. Any client like this is a little apprehensive before starting. I think they feel they're admitting they're weak and unable. This is exactly the opposite.
I told him we're going to do this session as performance enhancement work, partly to ease him in, but also because it's exactly that. A session to make him perform better.
However, I'm not showing him techniques to improve what he's already excellent at. I'm looking to find where he has blind spots in his mental framework that are impeding him and making him suffer.
You see, if a leader or CEO is brought into a new business or brings a troubleshooter into their own business, they want to find out what's going on under the hood. What's efficient and what's not going well. This is critical to the success of the business. The best at this are extremely valuable and are paid as such.
But here's the pattern I observe. When it comes to the CEO looking for what's efficient within them and what's not going well, they usually suppress that info for fear of finding a structural fault or weakness they're ashamed of.
Top achievement execs are like soldiers. They never stop, mainly bulletproof, until the wheel spins full circle and they crash. Or create too much imbalance in their lives and it affects their family. Not high performance.
I've seen many businesses and sports teams rot from within because an individual's internal problems are ignored.
At the end of the session, I watched my client, calm, completely attentive. He was seeing such valuable information about how he operates and where his traps lie. I felt huge gratitude for being able to do this work.
He now knows why certain things are so profoundly painful, why he finds it difficult to be satisfied, and why he's trapped by old internal operating systems. All I have to do is show him the facts and data. That is the healing.
He is also extremely intelligent because he is doing the most valuable work - not only for his himself but also for his business and those around him.
The truth will set you free.
If you're interested in finding out why you have certain troubles in your life, either physical or non-physical, or you simply want to re-find enjoyment in your life and work, get in touch.

The world's highest intelligence is nature.
Medicine, from medi, meaning to bring to centre, and cine, from the ancient sin, not the interpretation of moral failing, but the archer's term: to miss the mark.
True medicine, then, is the art of returning to centre all the ways we have strayed from our own nature.
This is the way.

"The menu is not the meal" — Alan Watts It’s a finger pointing at the moon, but it’s not the moon.
It's been one hell of a Christmas break and new year already. I spent a relaxing time in Germany and felt the need to retreat from social media and emails.
I watched my paying attention/ignore wheel bobbing up and down, urging me to post, but in watching it and understanding its true nature, conditioned in childhood, it calmed down and I went back to more solitude and time close to my family.
I have just returned from another trip to the UK to stay with some dear friends. They are very awake to the times we live in and I spent most of my stay listening to their thoughts and wisdom. They live in accordance with the sun (or lack of it as it pissed it down daily). When the sun sets they use red lights and a fire for light and this induced a wonderful relaxation where we were in bed by 8pm. This meant we were up early and within a few days, we were enjoying this new balance with nature routine.
We are now back in Madeira and have set up our place with the same lighting and it's so peaceful and energising for the day. The UK was also interesting for my work.
Whilst I was in Germany over Christmas, we watched the Chronicles of Narnia. In one of the scenes the kids are dropped off at a train station and the sign caught my attention... Tring.
This rang a bell as I had visited many years before to speak with a world renowned ballet dancer there. I remembered this with warmth as we got on really well and our approaches to performance were very similar. Back to our recent trip to the UK, I was driving through a little village we stayed in and I saw a signpost for Tring, being the next village on. This struck me and I got that sense that this was not a coincidence (they don't exist).
So that evening I reached out to the teacher and said I was in the next village for the week. He immediately got back to me and during a call asked if I would be interested in lecturing for the oldest ballerinas. That week I visited the prestigious school twice with my girls, who were thrilled to sit in on ballet auditions. My girls haven't stopped leaping around the house since.
I am so excited to have this opportunity arise, my creative juices are flowing again in creating a possible ground-breaking syllabus including hamster wheel work, meridians, four element theory and high performance conditioning.
Looking back I knew that in being quiet and deepening my understanding of how my mind/body works would enable me to see more clearly what makes me come alive.
The signs are there when we are still and understand how our beautiful world works.
