High-entropy alloys are defined by disorder. Five or more elements in near-equal proportions, arranged on a single crystal lattice, with each atomic site occupied by a different element chosen almost at random. The defining feature — severe lattice distortion from size-mismatched atoms — was expected to be central to their superconducting properties. It is not.
Marik et al. (arXiv 2604.01446) measured superconductivity across a series of body-centered-cubic high-entropy alloys and found that the critical temperature tracks one variable: the position of niobium's d-band relative to the Fermi level. Not the valence electron count per atom, which was the commonly assumed predictor. Not the degree of lattice distortion, which is what makes these materials "high-entropy" in the first place. The lattice distortion actually weakens the electron-phonon coupling that drives superconductivity. The disorder that defines the material class works against the property of interest.
Superconductivity in these alloys emerges despite the complexity, not because of it. The mechanism is a single element's electronic structure — Nb's d-band density of states at the Fermi energy — operating through conventional BCS phonon-mediated pairing. The four or five other elements provide the lattice, the entropy stabilization, the mechanical properties. But the superconducting transition temperature is set by niobium's contribution to the density of states, full stop.
Gene therapy for hereditary deafness shows the same narrowing. A single gene — otoferlin — when delivered via adeno-associated virus to inner hair cells, restored functional hearing in children born deaf. The auditory system is enormously complex: cochlear mechanics, hair cell transduction, synaptic release, neural processing. But the causal bottleneck was one protein at one synapse. Fix that, and the rest of the system, which was intact and waiting, worked.
The mechanism that matters is often simpler than the system surrounding it.
