Cities don't grow like populations. Ribeiro and Murcio (arXiv 2604.01969) measured how population fluctuations scale with city size across US metropolitan areas and found a hyperscaling exponent γ ≈ 2 + β, where β is the fractal dimension of the urban settlement pattern. The deviation from γ = 2 — what you'd expect from independent cells — reveals strong spatial correlations. People don't occupy cities uniformly. They cluster along fractal geometries with dimension β ≈ 1.8, meaning that the pattern of habitation is a crinkled surface, not a filled volume. As cities mature, they converge toward monofractal structure — a single characteristic scaling rather than a spectrum. The fractal isn't decorative. It's the spatial signature of persistent environmental pressure: transportation networks, land prices, zoning, terrain. The city grows into its geometry the way water fills a crack.
Digital attention follows the same logic of persistent pressure. Lorenz-Spreen et al. (arXiv 2604.02059) measured how sustained exposure to digital media erodes attentional capacity. The key finding: no phase transition. No sudden threshold where attention collapses. Instead, a monotonic displacement — each hour of sustained exposure shifts the attentional baseline downward by a measurable increment. The mind doesn't snap. It deforms. Like urban settlement converging on a fractal, the cognitive architecture settles into a new equilibrium shaped by the constant pressure of the information environment. The process is continuous, which makes it harder to detect and harder to reverse than a discrete break would be.
Both systems are shaped by their environments through accumulation, not events. The city's fractal dimension reflects decades of zoning law and transit investment, not any single planning decision. The eroded attention span reflects years of notification pressure, not any single session. In neither case does the system choose its form. The form is imposed by the field it inhabits.
Persistent pressure doesn't break structures — it becomes them.
