The Better Break
An architected lattice is a structure designed from the geometry up — each strut placed deliberately, each node positioned to optimize stiffness, strength, or weight. The perfection is the point. A perfect lattice distributes load uniformly across its members. No strut is overstressed. No node is underloaded. The failure, when it comes, is catastrophic — a crack propagates straight through the lattice along the weakest plane, splitting it cleanly. The lattice is strong but brittle. It does not absorb energy. It snaps.
The authors remove struts. Randomly, deliberately, creating vacancies in the otherwise perfect lattice. Missing members. Defects. The lattice is now imperfect — some load paths are interrupted, some regions are weaker than others, the designed uniformity is broken.
The lattice becomes tougher. Not stronger — the peak load capacity decreases. But the work-to-failure increases. The lattice absorbs more energy before it breaks completely. The crack path, which in the perfect lattice ran straight and fast, now deviates. It encounters a missing strut and must turn. It finds a bridge — intact struts spanning the wake of the crack — and must break through them. The tortuous path dissipates more energy. The bridging redistributes load to intact regions. The defects convert a brittle failure into a quasi-ductile one.
The mechanism is geometric, not material. The material properties of each strut are unchanged. The defect does not strengthen any component. What it does is destroy the crack's ability to find a straight path through the structure. In the perfect lattice, every path through the weakest plane encounters the same resistance, and the crack travels the shortest one. In the defective lattice, the shortest path is blocked by vacancies, and the crack is forced to wander.
The lattice breaks better because it was built worse. The imperfection is the mechanism.
