Untakeoverable: The 1992 Nightclub Scene That Explains What Bitcoin Is For

Her fictional cypherpunks said the world had already been taken over. Their goal wasn't to take it back. It was to make sure it could never be taken again.

In September 1992, a counterculture magazine editor wrote a satirical nightclub scene that gave the cypherpunks their name. Buried in the dialogue is a one-word mission statement that cuts through more Bitcoin confusion than most whitepaper explainers. It's a moral claim, not a price claim, and it came from a woman who had spent her twenties learning the hard way that taking something back isn't enough.

A few weeks ago we published the story of Jude Milhon's phage model, the 1992 email that laid out how open technology spreads and how Bitcoin eventually did. That was the how. This is the why. And the why came first, by eight days, in the strangest founding document any movement has ever had.

Picture a nightclub called the Black Hole. Loud band, bad lighting. A woman in her fifties, writing under the nickname Lady Ada, steps on two people wearing full black chadors. Not religious dress. Costume. The chadors are fitted with electronics: "three-eyed goggles," "speakers hanging like earrings off a basketweave headband," and "big weighted club-foot boots with concealed lifts, to disguise the wearer's height." Their voices come out of synthesizers as a cello, a saxophone, a theremin, a croaking toad. Nothing about them can be identified. Not height, not gait, not voice, not face.

She banters with them until she figures out what they are. "I think you're cryptoanarchists," she says, and then, improvising, "what I'd call cypherpunks!" One of them laughs.

That's it. That's where the word comes from. Not a manifesto, not a meeting minute. A gag line in a piece of gonzo fiction that Judith Milhon posted to a brand-new mailing list on September 25, 1992, with a note saying it might run in her MONDO 2000 column, "Irresponsible Journalism." The real cypherpunks took the name and kept it.

But the name isn't the interesting part. Keep reading the scene.

"We're just trying to get some of it back"

She asks the chadors what they're doing. The cello answers, "very suave":

The world has already been taken over. You may have noticed this. We're just trying to get some of it back.

Then, a few lines later, when she needles them about whether they're planning some kind of coup, the cello comes back "annoyed":

We don't believe in takeovers. In fact, we are working to make things UNTAKEOVERABLE.

The toad fills in the program: "So, full-RSA encrypted EVERYTHING. No back doors. Secure digital money. Swiss bank accounts for the millions." Somebody else explains the hard part is guaranteeing privacy for pseudonyms, "so you can have a pseudonymous economy," where your pseudonyms carry reputations from the people you've done business with.

Check the date: September 1992. Encrypted everything, no back doors, secure digital money, a pseudonymous economy with portable reputation. That's a description of the thing Satoshi would ship sixteen years later, written as dialogue for two people in weighted boots at a nightclub.

(A necessary honesty check. Milhon didn't invent any of this. The chadors are composites of the real cryptographers she'd been hanging around, Tim May and Eric Hughes and the rest, and the ideas were theirs: May had been circulating his Crypto Anarchist Manifesto since 1988, and David Chaum had been publishing on digital cash since the early eighties. What Milhon did was hear it, understand it, and write it down in a form a normal person could enjoy.)

Taken back is not the same as safe

So what does "untakeoverable" actually mean, and why is it a sharper word than "decentralized" or "censorship-resistant" or any of the other terms we usually reach for?

Start with who was writing it. Milhon was born in 1939 and raised in a Marine Corps family. In 1965 she helped organize the Selma to Montgomery march. She was jailed in Montgomery for trespassing and again in Jackson, Mississippi, for civil disobedience. She spent her twenties putting her body where the law said it couldn't go, and she helped win. The Voting Rights Act passed that August.

And then she watched what winning looks like when the thing you won is held in someone else's hands. Rights granted by an authority are rights that authority can narrow, reinterpret, or quietly stop enforcing. The sixties movement took a piece of the world back. It did not, and could not, make that piece untakeoverable, because the mechanism of protection was still a government deciding, year by year, how much protection to extend.

You see the difference now. "Getting some of it back" is a political project. You petition, you march, you win a vote, you hold the ground until the next election. "Untakeoverable" is an engineering project. You build something that doesn't have a lever for the authority to pull in the first place. Nobody has to grant you encrypted email. You either use it or not and it either works or not. Permission doesn't enter into it.

Milhon spent the first half of her adult life on the political project and the second half on the engineering one. The scene in the Black Hole is her writing down the moment she understood why the second one mattered more. She closes the piece calling the nerds her "bredren" and musing that she "might even join the revolution, which is, heh, already in progress."

Money is where the takeover is most complete

Here's where this stops being history and starts being about your savings.

Of all the systems that have "already been taken over," money is the one where the takeover is most total and least noticed. Nobody voted for it. It happened in a series of technical adjustments across a century: the creation of central banks, the suspension of gold redemption, legal tender laws, and finally the 1971 closing of the gold window, after which the dollar became a pure promise, backed by nothing but the issuer's discretion.

The Austrian economist Jörg Guido Hülsmann spends his 2008 book The Ethics of Money Production on a question most economists skip: not whether fiat money is efficient, but whether it is legitimate. His answer is blunt. A money that can only exist because the state forbids competitors (legal tender laws), protects its issuer from redemption (suspension of specie payment), and compels you to accept it for debts is not a market institution. It's a coercive one. Its expansion is a transfer of wealth from everyone holding the old units to whoever receives the new ones first, and because the transfer is invisible and never consented to, Hülsmann argues it's a moral problem before it's an economic one.

That's the Austrian version of "the world has already been taken over." The money you earn, save, and plan your life around is a system someone else controls and can change by decree. Not hypothetically. The purchasing power of a dollar saved in 1971 is down more than 85 percent. Nobody took that from you in a way you could point to. The system was simply designed so that it could be taken, a little at a time, forever.

Milhon's fictional cypherpunks and Hülsmann's real ethics arrive at the same conclusion from opposite directions. She wasn't an Austrian (she was a Berkeley radical who wrote for a cyberpunk magazine and would have found the word "praxeology" hilarious), and he wasn't a hacker. But both of them understood that the problem with a system that can be taken over is not that it will be. It's that you have to spend your whole life hoping it won't.

What "untakeoverable" money looks like

So what would it take to make money untakeoverable? Not "take back the Fed." Not elect better people to run the printer. Build money with no printer.

Bitcoin's supply schedule is fixed at 21 million, and not fixed the way a law is fixed, where a majority can change it next session. It's fixed the way a rule is fixed in a game that tens of thousands of independent nodes are all playing at once, where changing the rule means convincing every one of them to run different software, and where anyone who refuses just keeps playing the old game. There is no office where the change gets signed. There's no lever.

Nobody can freeze a Bitcoin address, because there's no account and no institution standing between you and the ledger. Nobody can refuse your transaction for the wrong politics, because the miners who include it don't know who you are and couldn't filter you if they wanted to without the rest of the network routing around them. Nobody can dilute what you hold, because the issuance is proof-of-work and the schedule is public and verifiable by anyone with a laptop.

Notice that none of these are features that make Bitcoin go up. They're features that make it hard to take. That's the distinction Milhon's cello was drawing. The point was never to seize the world. It was to build the parts of it you care about in a form that can't be seized back.

This is why Bitcoin isn't well described as an asset class, even though it trades like one. An asset class is a bet about price. Bitcoin is a stance about who gets to decide. It says: the terms of my money should not be adjustable by people I didn't choose, for reasons I'm not told, at a pace I can't see. That's a moral claim. It's the same claim a 26-year-old made by sitting in a Mississippi jail in 1965, translated into a protocol by people she'd eventually meet in a nightclub.

The lever you still hold

Now the uncomfortable part, because "untakeoverable" only describes the network. It doesn't automatically describe your coins.

Bitcoin held on an exchange is takeoverable. Fully. The exchange holds the keys, which means the exchange's regulator holds the exchange, which means a letter from a government office can freeze what you thought was yours in an afternoon. We've watched this happen to protesters' bank accounts in Canada, and the mechanism is identical whether the frozen balance is dollars or a custodial claim on Bitcoin. You've just re-created the thing the chadors were trying to escape, with extra steps.

The whole engineering achievement, every bit of the work from Chaum's digital cash through Satoshi's timechain, collapses to nothing the moment you hand the keys back to an institution. All the properties that make Bitcoin untakeoverable live at the level of keys. If you hold them, no one can take the coins without taking you. If someone else holds them, you own a promise, and promises are the oldest takeoverable thing there is.

Self-custody isn't a power-user feature. It's the step where "untakeoverable" stops being a description of a network and becomes a description of your life. Generate your keys. Write down your seed. Verify, if you can, with your own node. Then you're not hoping the system holds. You are the system holding.

Jude Milhon died in 2003, five years before the whitepaper. She never saw digital money that actually worked. But she'd already written the only review that matters: not "is it going up?" but "can they take it?"

Not your keys, not your coins. Not your keys, nothing untakeoverable.

If you'd like help taking that step, Bitcoin Well was built for it: buy Bitcoin and have it sent straight to a wallet you control, with no account balance anywhere for anyone to freeze.

A note on sourcing

The nightclub scene is Judith Milhon's post "secretions," sent to the cypherpunks mailing list on September 25, 1992 and preserved at mailing-list-archive.cryptoanarchy.wiki. All quoted dialogue ("The world has already been taken over...", "UNTAKEOVERABLE", "Secure digital money. Swiss bank accounts for the millions", "a pseudonymous economy") is reproduced from the archive with her capitalization. The characters are fictional composites; the ideas belong to the real cypherpunks she was writing about, chiefly Tim May (The Crypto Anarchist Manifesto, 1988) and the digital-cash work of David Chaum going back to 1982. Milhon's own confirmation that she coined the word is in her June 21, 1994 post to the list; the cat story is from January 20, 1995.

Her biography (Marine Corps family, Selma to Montgomery, the jailings in Montgomery and Jackson, Community Memory, MONDO 2000, her 2003 death) is from the SFGate obituary, Wikipedia, and Capitol Technology University's profile "Girls need modems!" The misattributed line "Privacy is the necessary power to selectively reveal oneself to the world" is Eric Hughes, A Cypherpunk's Manifesto (1993), not Milhon.

Jörg Guido Hülsmann's argument is from The Ethics of Money Production (Ludwig von Mises Institute, 2008), particularly the chapters on legal tender, legalized suspension of payments, and fiat inflation as a moral problem. The dollar's purchasing-power loss since 1971 is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI calculator and should be re-checked at publish time; the figure moves.
