The Last Analog Man: What John C. Dvorak Understood About Value That the Algorithm Never Will

A curmudgeon with a microphone spent his whole life watching technology swallow the world. Then he showed us how to survive it.

John C. Dvorak died on July 20, 2026, at 80. He spent four decades as one of technology journalism's loudest, most contrarian voices, and nearly nineteen years co-hosting a podcast that took no ads, answered to no one, and got paid directly by the people who listened (sometimes even in bitcoin). That model was never just a funding gimmick. It was a philosophy. And in an age where AI can manufacture infinite content for almost nothing, it might be the only thing that still makes sense.

I have been listening to two guys deconstruct the news for the better part of twenty years.

That's a strange thing to admit. But if you've ever had a podcast in your ears long enough, you know what I mean. The voices become furniture. They're in the kitchen while you cook. They're in the car on the long drive. When one of them dies, it doesn't feel like a headline. It feels like a beloved, sometimes squeeky, chair suddenly went missing from the room.

On July 20, John C. Dvorak died at home at 80. His widow said he'd complained of low blood sugar at dinner, asked for a spoonful of honey, and was watching an episode of NCIS when he quietly slipped away. Three days later, Adam Curry sat down at the microphone alone and recorded the memorial episode of the No Agenda Show, the podcast the two of them started in 2007 and kept making, twice a week, until the week John died. Nineteen years. Almost 1,900 episodes. And he was still doing it at 80.

Here's the thing I keep coming back to, though. John Dvorak's life is a near-perfect map of what has happened to all of us. Follow his career and you're really following the story of how technology went from a weird hobby in the garage to the operating system of the entire human race. He was there at the start. He narrated the middle. And he found, almost by accident, a way to opt out of the worst part of the ending.

The 'Buzzkill" watched it all go down

Dvorak became a contributing editor at PC Magazine in 1986. In 1986, "the computer" was a beige box that hobbyists and accountants used. It was niche. It was nerdy. It was, to most people, faintly embarrassing. He wrote his "Inside Track" column and something like 4,000 articles across four decades, plus work for the New York Times, TechTV (where I first saw him, thanks to my dad), CNET, and TWiT. He built a career explaining machines to people who, for most of that career, considered the machines optional.

They are not so optional these days.

The thing Dvorak covered as a beat became the thing that now blankets every aspect of society. The computer left the desk. It went into your pocket, then your wrist, then your doorbell and your car and your refrigerator and, lately, into the very sentences you read. Technology stopped being a section of the newspaper. It ate the newspaper, tthe printing press, the paperboy, and eventually the reader's attention span too.

Dvorak spent his life on the inside of that transformation, and he never fully trusted it. That was his gift. He was a professional skeptic in an industry that ran on hype. He was famously, gloriously wrong about a few things (I guess people did want the mouse after all) and bracingly right about many more, and either way he refused to be a cheerleader. In a business that paid people to be excited, he continually found a way to make a living being suspicious. (Ask yourself how many tech commentators you can say that about today.)

The old model is dying with him

Here's what's actually ending, and it's bigger than one man.

For roughly a century, journalism ran on a single deal: advertisers paid, and you got the content "for free." Except it was never free. You paid with your attention, and later with your data, and the whole time the person actually being served was not you. It was the advertiser. The reader was the product. The reader was always the product.

That model is now collapsing from two directions at once. From below, it's being hollowed out by AI, which can generate an infinite tide of passable, keyword-stuffed, nobody-actually-wrote-this content at a cost approaching zero (do you think I wrote all this copy by myself???). Why pay a columnist with forty years of judgment when a model can produce ten thousand words before lunch? And from above, it's being squeezed by the platforms, the handful of gatekeepers who now decide what gets distributed, what gets throttled, and what gets quietly disappeared.

So the question the next decade is going to ask, over and over, is this: when content becomes infinite and nearly free to fake, what is actually worth paying for?

Dvorak and Curry answered that question in 2007. They just did it so quietly that most people missed it.

Value for value

No Agenda took no advertisers. None. It ran, and still runs, on something Curry named the "value-for-value" model. The idea is almost aggressively simple. The show is given away. If it creates value in your life, you send value back, whatever amount you decide, whenever you decide. Listeners aren't a passive audience to be sold. They're called "producers," and the ones who give the most are "executive producers," read out on air by name. The people who make artwork make it for free. The people who clip the audio clip it for free. The whole thing is a voluntary economy.

Now, why does that matter beyond being a nice story about a nice podcast?

Because value for value is a complete answer to both problems at once. It's censorship-resistant, and it's AI-proof, and it turns out those are the same property wearing two coats.

Let me put it in Austrian terms, because this is where it gets interesting. Carl Menger, the founder of the Austrian school, blew up classical economics in 1871 with one deceptively boring insight: value is not a property that lives inside an object. Value is subjective. It exists only in the mind of a particular person, at a particular moment, ranking this thing above that thing. A glass of water is worth almost nothing by a river and almost everything in a desert. The water didn't change. You did.

Ad-based media can't price that. It can only price attention in bulk, eyeballs by the thousand, sold to someone who isn't you. Value for value can price it exactly, because it lets each individual do the one thing Menger said value actually is: decide, personally, what a thing is worth to them and act on it. Fifty dollars from someone whose week you genuinely improved is real economic information. A million ad impressions are noise dressed up as a number.

Ayn Rand, who belongs in this lineage whether or not she'd have wanted the company, called this the trader principle. You offer value and you receive value, by mutual consent, to mutual benefit, with no one sacrificed and no one looted. She meant it as a moral stance, a way of dealing with other people that treats them as ends rather than as marks. Value for value is the trader principle turned into a business model. Dvorak, the arch-cynic, spent the last third of his life running one of the most quietly idealistic economic experiments in media. He'd probably hate that I put it that way.

Why the algorithm can't follow

Here's where the AI part bites (see what I did there?).

An algorithm can counterfeit content. It cannot counterfeit relationship. It can write a passable column in Dvorak's style, sure, but it cannot be the voice that sat in ten thousand strangers' kitchens for nineteen years and earned the specific, irreplaceable loyalty that made those strangers open their wallets unprompted. The value-for-value model doesn't pay for words. Words are about to be free forever. It pays for the human on the other end of the connection, for trust, for judgment, for the thing that can't be generated because it can only be built.

So a business model that charges for the human is not a quaint holdover. It's a lifeboat. When the ad economy drowns in synthetic content, the creators still standing will be the ones who were paid directly by people who chose to pay them.

And it's censorship-resistant for the exact same reason. When your income comes from advertisers, you can be silenced by scaring the advertisers, no need to touch the creator at all. When it comes from a platform, you can be silenced by a policy change nobody voted on. But when the value flows straight from listener to creator, there's no middleman to lean on. Curry understood this better than almost anyone. He didn't just preach the model, he built the rails for it. As "the Podfather," one of the people who put podcasting on the map in the first place, he went on to co-create Podcasting 2.0 and the Podcast Index with Dave Jones, an open standard that lets anyone publish outside Apple's and Spotify's walled gardens. Its signature feature? Streaming sats: the ability to send tiny amounts of Bitcoin over the Lightning Network, per minute, directly to a creator as you listen.

And, although John didn't work on that bit himself, I find it beautifully fitting that his podcasting partner did. John was their for that final revolution too, even while talking crap about Bitcoin through all of it.

This is the Bitcoin story, told sideways

You might think this is a media essay that grew a Bitcoin tail at the end. It isn't. It's a Bitcoin essay that started in a podcast studio.

Because everything value for value needs, Bitcoin provides. Money that moves directly from person to person with no intermediary to capture, censor, or debase it. The same reason ad-funded speech is fragile is the reason fiat rails are fragile: they run through gatekeepers, and gatekeepers can be pressured. We've written before about how the war machine, and every machine of control, ultimately runs on fiat, on money that someone else issues and someone else can switch off. Value for value only works if the value itself can't be stopped in transit. That's not a feature you bolt on. That's Bitcoin's entire reason for existing.

And notice the timing. The same month John Dvorak died, India was ordering GitHub to pull down repositories for a Bitcoin-linked messaging app, and the U.S. State Department was standing up a "Freedom Tech" program. The fight over who gets to speak and who gets to transact isn't theoretical, and it isn't slowing down. Permissionless money and permissionless speech are the same fight. They always were. Dvorak just happened to spend his career on the speech half and happened to be paid by the solution in his second half.

There's a lovely symmetry in that. A man who spent forty years watching technology centralize power, ending his life being a part of building the tools that hand it back. From a nerdy hobby that lived on the margins, to the center of everything, to a set of rails ordinary people can use to route around the center entirely.

That's the inheritance, if you want it. Not the columns, though they were great. The model. Give value. Take value. Cut out the middleman who was never really serving you. Hold the keys to your own money the same way No Agenda held the keys to its own distribution, so that no advertiser, no platform, and no algorithm gets a vote on whether you get to keep going.

The old way of doing things really is dying, and some of it should. But the good part, the human part, the part where one person offers something real and another decides freely what it's worth, that part isn't going anywhere. It just needs money that works the same way. If you want to start holding yours directly, Bitcoin Well exists to make that as ordinary as it should be.

In the morning, John.
