i think this phenomenon is not strictly nostr-specific. in my opinion, it's a consequence of ai, (same) memes, bots, and algols that has destroyed the integrity of short messaging apps. we have reached the "whatever" stage in public spaces. by contrast, books or long-form podcasts still provide real value. and ofc irl encouters.

Thinking about the end of the world does not have to be dystopian. Think of Cabo de Finisterra, for example. Near where I live, there is a place called Tierfehd, which Karl Kraus once described, romantically, as the end of the world. He meant this in a positive sense: as the end of the hectic, socially surveilled, and unfree world.

Halfway through
' The Gold Standard, I’m intrigued by its novel genre and delighted by how gripping it is. Without giving away too much, the takeaway for me is this: When the status quo drifts too far from reality, imagining—and building—a better one stops being optional.

"Yet the stupidity and senselessness of the war were no impediments to the Kaiser abusing his central bank to finance fighting insane, expensive, pointless wars that were irrelevant to his people in his pursuit of grandeur. Via round. about ways, the German people’s savings were to finance the war effort."
- in "The Gold Standard". You can replace "the Kaiser" with any of President, Prime Minister, King, Queen, The Government and the sentence would still hold. Since hundreds of years. This got to end. Decentralization of power is worth a try.

If you are 50+ (euphemism for old), and zoom out, and zoom out again, and again, aaaand again: what do you see? Me: I am in the post reproductive phase, where I have become invisible to Darwinism. My genes are not going anywhere. And my mitochondria never did. That is kind of cool for a libertarian, isn't it, freedom pure? Now: Jump onto clawdstuff? Or support darwinistically exposed people to jump onto clawdstuff? Hahaha - this is fun. I know my answer - find yours.

Did you ever watch a fly (of the 1-day life expectancy group) and wondered whether they would engage in a healthy lifestyle? Stretching after landing. Low sugar diet. No high speed adventures. To live 1.01 days? That fly is us.
There is so much interesting stuff that I read, experiment with, try out, and debug that the day is over before I share any of that here. In addition I have a lot of options (both informed and otherwise) which age/wisdom 😇 prevents me from sharing. And then I have accumulated technical user-level Nostr debt like relay mismatch, embarrassing incoming payment failures, etc. All leading to a busy SILENCE 😁

Bitcoin is the best chance to get our lives back into our own hands. People here probably know this. But then, people in control surely know this too, and they will try everything to steal your Bitcoin. Buying, selling, and owning Bitcoin, while ethically and morally clean, may become illegal at some point and for some time. True system change will happen only if we are prepared to hold on to our Bitcoin in such a scenario.

Was thinking about "logic" in biology while reading Nick Lane's book "Power, Sex, Suicide" (ignore the catchy title; it's a great book). Not every logic applied by someone who studies nature is automatically bio-logic. In summary and retrospect, I would say that most of the logic I have used in my years in biology was math, physics, or engineering logic. Very little was truly bio-logic. Nick Lane, by contrast, argues very logically that bacterial design prevented them from growing and evolving the complexity of the higher organisms that surround us today. What I am trying to say is this: determine and address the root question (challenge) in what you do as early and as rigorously as possible.

I have been driving a Tesla Model 3 for 5 years (bought it right after Tesla announced it had added Bitcoin to its balance sheet). A great car, very reliable. But I wonder why Tesla would constantly nag you about driving a little bit too fast, breaking a little too late (like having grandma on the passenger seat), or watching something else for 5 seconds when you are alone on the road, and refusing to re-activate the USD 7k full-self-driving package after ignoring their nanny advice for a few times (happened to a friend). All this while Elon is spearheading sovereignty and free speech. Drove a Taycan the other day just to see that all the nanny functions can easily be switched off using the standard user interface.

Bitcoin is counter-culture: leaderless, permissionless, trustless, censorship-resistant, and discussed at an unconference.
In the late 80ies and early 90ties I spent all my time on molecular and cellular biology which earned me a PhD in the natural sciences. This is not a bragging exercise but the preamble to a book recommendation. Granted I studied three decades ago, it is nevertheless amazing how much more clarity and insights I get from Nick Lane‘s books. Had he been my professor then I might never have gone down the software engineering path, might have missed Bitcoin altogether 😬. So, if you have a friend or family member who studies biology - here is the perfect gift 🍀. #biology #mitochondria #energy #life #genesis

I find it both fascinating and surprising how much of the publishing world (including posts and podcasts) is increasingly synchronized daily, with ideas starting with a thought leader on one end of the world and ending with a poll among the people on the other within 24 hours. I admire people who take the time to breed their own ideas to fruition. And I need to remind myself to be more critical of what I read, even if it sounds compelling at first: do I really want to read, digest, and adopt it? Or do I let it pass?

Last Friday, I sold my boat, MARANEA, after five years of intensive sailing. It was a fabulous experience, alone, with friends, or with family. First and foremost, it has brought me closer to the elements and allowed me to learn how to work with nature. Of course, this is also sad, but I believe I've found the right moment to say goodbye. Letting go is a natural part of life and enables me to stay free. https://cdn.satellite.earth/aefcd324cd61d636f812df5cc806f5578933a8b01a67264d46e23d2b6a6b4205.jpg #sailing #life #nature

The next time you have argument with someone dear to you, consider the possibility that the misunderstanding or difference is owed to progress on the personal timeline. I have misunderstood others because I was ahead or behind by a few years. In order to "meet", we need to align on more than just four dimensions. Sometimes, as in the case I am trying to make, we might not really disagree at all, we merely miss each other on the timeline.
The more I read about the history of computing and cryptography, the more I see this absurd whack-a-mole game between individuals and the state. Governments impose controls, individuals push boundaries. From ancient civilizations to Bitcoin, the cat-and-mouse continues. We need to accept our current state of affairs, realize how intellectually poor it is, and work from here #cryptography #individualism
Thank you, Gloria and
for this interview. It's cool to see some technical aspects of Bitcoin delivered to a broader audience, and hopefully, it will show listeners the enormous depth of Bitcoin, the phenomenon, and redirect their attention away from headlines and onto the technical beauty.

In his book "Scale", Geoffrey West, takes a close look at Biology using the physics toolbox and finds fascinating patterns. Did you know that the hearts of all mammals beat approximately 1.5 billion times? The heart beat rate gets slower as the weight of the animal grows, with heavier animals therefore living correspondingly longer. According to the data compiled in the book, this rule also applied to us, homo sapiens, up to about 1800. Thanks to the technological and societal improvements, our hearts now beat 2.5 billion times on average.
A second finding was that all mammals consume approximately 300 food calories per gram of body mass throughout their entire lifespan. This was also true for us humans before we started agriculture, and our energy flux corresponded to about 100 watts. Since then, it has grown to about 11'000 watts, almost as much as that of a whale.
Suppose unconstrained Darwinian evolution were the only mechanism at play then we would not expect to see "constants" like the one's above. We would see a continuum of values. It was this discrepancy that led West to the research and the findings published in the book that I am not going to leak here, of course.

... even Freud admitted that reducing human behavior to unconscious drives could sometimes miss the obvious truth. He famously said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”
A man is shaving with a straight-edged razor when the razor drops out of his hands and lops off his penis. He gathers it up, stuffs it in his pocket, rushes outside and hails a cab, telling the driver to get him to the emergency room fast.
There he tells the surgeon what happened and the surgeon says, “We'll have to work quickly. Give it to me.”
The man reaches into his pocket and deposits its contents in the surgeon's hand.
“But this is a cigar,’ says the surgeon, “not a penis!”
And the man says, “Oh, my God, | must have smoked it in the cab.”

Looks like my compiler is a bit of an overachiever: ... The concepts of being "antifragile" or going "long vol" comes to mind:
"The reason that being healthy and robust equates with greater variance and larger fluctuations, and therefore a larger fractal dimension as in an EKG, is closely related to the resilience of such systems. Being overly rigid and constrained means that there isn’t sufficient flexibility for the necessary adjustments needed to withstand the inevitable small shocks and perturbations to which any system is subjected. Think of the stresses and strains your heart is exposed to every day, many of which are unexpected." Copied from the book "SCALE" by Geoffrey West.
