😢 TNA-OS Canaan v0.4.1: the shitcoin detector gets friendlier

Quick follow-up to the v0.4 announcement. v0.4.1 changes how TNA-OS handles shitcoins.

What changed?TNA-OS is Bitcoin firmware, and it has always detected when a pool serves non-Bitcoin work. Until now, it punished you for it: the miner was throttled down to 100 MHz and the dashboard was taken over by a big 💩. That's gone. Your miner now keeps running at full speed, whatever you point it at.

So what happens now?While a connected pool is serving non-Bitcoin work, the dev fee goes from 2 % to 4 %. That's it.

It works exactly like the normal fee: the dev pool takes a share of the normal pool rotation, now 4 % instead of 2 %. The dev pool still mines Bitcoin.

Point the miner back at a Bitcoin pool and the fee drops straight back to 2 %. Fully transparent, just like the 2 %: The dashboard shows a small "😢 Shitcoin detected · dev fee 4 %" line above the hashrate chart, and the Pools card shows "Dev fee 4 % (shitcoin detected)". The OLED shows a sad face once per screen rotation, now on both the Nano 3s and the Avalon Q.

The API reports devFeePct: 4 while it's active.

Why the change? TNA-OS is a one-man project: every line of code, every reverse-engineering session, every bug fix and every new board port is done by me. Until now, all my firmware was given out in exchange for a coffee, as a one-off install. Honestly, that model wasn't sustainable: a single payment per device can't fund the ongoing reverse engineering, new features, bug fixes and support for new hardware like the Avalon Q. A small, transparent dev fee keeps development going for as long as the firmware runs, and it opens TNA-OS up to everyone.

How the 2 % dev fee works:
The dev pool simply joins your normal pool rotation with a 2 % share. Your pools mine the other 98 %, by your own quotas. Your pools, quotas, failover and settings work exactly as before. The fee doesn't take one of your 8 pool slots.

It's fully transparent. The dashboard shows the dev fee's live hashrate and share count, and the API reports the same, so you can check it yourself any time.

Blocking the dev pool won't get you that 2 % back… it'll just tell you you're cheap 😉

Executive Summary To the author's knowledge, this is the first time anyone has publicly reverse-engineered Canaan's A3197S Bitcoin mining ASIC — the chip at the heart of the Avalon Nano 3s and related Avalon-Nano-class hardware. The A3197S is closed silicon. Its host-to-chip mining protocol is undocumented; the second RISC-V core that drives it ships encrypted on flash; and there is no published information describing how the chip is brought up, configured, fed work, or how it reports results. Every existing deployment of this ASIC runs the vendor's closed stack and nothing else. This study cracked that wall: the complete A3197S serial mining protocol was recovered — chain enumeration, per-chip configuration and calibration, the high-speed bus bring-up, work dispatch, version-rolling (AsicBoost) setup, and the nonce-report format the chip returns. With the protocol understood, a branch of firmware (TNA-OS) was written to drive the chips directly, independently of any vendor software.

Antminer S21 XP — Enable Micro USB Port (AML Control Board) Hack

Stock Bitmain firmware released after September 2025 has the micro USB port disabled. This guide re-enables it so you can downgrade firmware and install TNA-OS.

What You Need

• AML control board + 12V power supply
• Windows PC or laptop
• USB-to-UART adapter with drivers installed (e.g. Silicon Labs CP2102)
• PuTTY (or any serial terminal)
• jumper or dupon wire to short JP1

Step 1 — Wire Up the UART Adapter

Connect your USB-to-UART adapter to the control board:

Plug the adapter into your PC and note the COM port number (e.g. COM7) from Device Manager.

Step 2 — Open PuTTY

• Connection type: Serial
• COM port: your port (e.g. COM7)
• Baud rate: 115200
• Everything else: leave as default

Step 3 — Verify Wiring

Power on the board. You should see the boot log scrolling in PuTTY. If you see nothing, check your TX/RX wiring — they are often swapped.

Power the board back off once confirmed.

Step 4 — Get the U-Boot Prompt

This is the critical step. You need to interrupt the boot sequence at exactly the right moment.

1. Make sure the PuTTY window is open and active
2. Short JP1 with jumper / dupon wire
3. Power on the board
4. The instant the first boot line appears — release JP1 and tap the spacebar a few times

You should see U-Boot start loading the ENV and drop to a prompt:

If it doesn't work first try — power off, power on again, and briefly short JP1 a couple of times during boot. This forces the board into U-Boot mode.

Step 5 — Enable the USB Port

At the axg_s400_v1_sbr# prompt, run these commands in order:

saveenv
setenv bitmain_usb_switch 1
saveenv

The first saveenv initialises the NAND env partition if it hasn't been written before. setenv enables the USB port. The second saveenv writes it permanently to NAND.

Step 6 — Reboot

Power cycle the board. The micro USB port is now enabled.

You can now plug in a FAT32 USB drive with the downgrade firmware and the board will detect it on boot.

Troubleshooting

Seeing nand init failed or saveenv errors? Run the commands in this exact order — the first saveenv is required to initialise the partition before you can write to it:

setenv bitmain_usb_switch 1
saveenv

Board not dropping to U-Boot prompt?

• Make sure PuTTY is the active window when you tap spacebar
• Try shorting JP1 slightly earlier or later during power-on
• A brief short is enough — do not hold it down

Disclosure The @JingleMinershop approached the author and requested an independent engineering review of their HashCard product. One unit was provided free of charge with no strings attached, specifically for the purpose of a thorough hardware teardown, firmware analysis, and honest assessment. The vendor understood and accepted that the findings — both positive and negative — would be published in full. They raised no objections to any aspect of this report.

Executive Summary The BTC HashCard is a well-engineered 9-chip Bitcoin mining device built around the BM1370 ASIC platform. Its hardware design demonstrates thoughtful engineering — dual stacked TPS546D24A voltage regulators, 3S3P ASIC topology for efficient voltage delivery, W5500 wired Ethernet, SPI LCD display, and a compact form factor with integrated heatsink.

The stock magic-miner firmware, while functional, raises significant privacy concerns due to undisclosed telemetry reporting to manufacturer-controlled servers. This report documents the complete hardware architecture, firmware analysis, and the process of bringing up Tech Nerd Army custom firmware V4.4 on the platform. All findings are based on hands-on testing with a device owned by the investigator, serial log capture, NVS extraction, firmware binary string analysis, and TPS546D24A datasheet reference.
