fox update: we've got shelf supports and shelves and plastic shelf liners, and there's so much room for screws and shit inside. also i made a little holder for vacuum spoot attachments. the bottom of the cabinet is doing a great job at blocking any glare from the ceiling lights from reaching the monitor, hopefully the under cabinet lights won't cause glare there once i put those in.

fox update: cut out some shelves, caulked the gaps around the back panels, and put on the first of two coats of paint. it's a high gloss paint so it'll dry smooth and glassy, easy to wipe down. i've also got some plastic shelf liner on the way for the surfaces, and i'll cut out one for the top too, cause i planned that empty space up there for storing tools in beeg plastic boxes.

fox update: we designed these cabinets on stream, now they're taking shape in real life. should i paint the insides, or leave them bare wood? most of the cabinet is 1/2" plywood, with some 1x4s on the back to mount it to the wall, a 2x4 being the back corner, and 1/4" plywood for the back. once all of them are finished, i'll frame the faces of them and start producing doors. almost certainly shaker style doors with 1/4" plywood in the middle.

fox update: got even more insulation up, and the first pieces of drywall for over the cabinets. i'm doing it before the cabinets go up cause it'll be super tight up there after. also picked up some plywood for the first cabinet, and some more 11/16" unistrut for shelves under the island. despite being old melamine coated MDF, the unistrut makes them plenty strong, the bottom shelf can hold both me and the miter saw at the same time. tons of shit will fit down there, even the tile saw.

fox update: insulation and more pegboard segments are in place along the other wall. for the first time in all of history, all my files are together in one place. also i put casters on a bunch of wire shelves i had lying around, two will fit under the left side of the workbench and the third will go here and hold the welder and plasma cutter. it seems we're gonna have less pegboard space than i thought, cause they're slightly smaller than 16x48 and nothing is gonna line up in chunks like that. maybe i'll cut one in half-ish and give it the flattest corner i can make without owning a box and pan brake.

fox update: cleaned up a LOT, then got another pegboard panel and the set of mini drawers hung up, and hooked the garage computer back up. it still needs the keyboard tray mounted to the bottom of the workbench there, but the in-wall USB cables are in and ready to go. i may delete windows from that PC and install debian, probably with xfce or cinnamon.

fox update: all the data cable is terminated and hooked up. i put a weatherproof cover over the exposed ethernet jacks to keep the dust out, and they're labeled in there with which switch port they go to so it's easier to set VLANs later. also hooked up a switch for the vacuum to turn it on for the flexible spoot without plugging a hose into an inlet. insulation is up on the first few stud bays, and i've got some 1/2" polyiso foam boards too to put over the spots with tons of conduit. maybe it won't reach the full R10 all the way, but better than nothing.

fox update: the original hole for shop vac exhaust has been deleted. i had some leftover concrete mix i put in a 5 gallon paint bucket with a tight sealing lid this spring and made an incredibly thick batch that could hold itself up for a vertical edge. after about a month, or perhaps all the way into next spring, i'll give it some caulk around the edges and then primer and paint. also added a second vacuum inlet on the other side of the workbench and hooked up the semi-rigid spoot with the blast gate. next inlet will be all the way on the other side of the garage and i gotta think through any other stops i want in between cause it's going through the ceiling in a way that won't allow a pipe cutter to rotate around it, so at the very least i'll need to add a wye or sweep tee with a cap over it.

fox update: more data conduits in, as well as the fiber for future use. it can just stay coiled up in a 4-11/16 square box until it's needed, surely multimode transceivers will still be around by then. no pull strings yet, ran out of time to get to that. the joist bay above is getting mighty crowded with conduits to various places, there were already two up there going upstairs before i started adding any for the garage.

on a side note, has anyone ever used a roto-split for anything but armored fiber? do they start becoming useful for like 10/3 and larger solid conductor MC or something that winds up being difficult to squeeze into splitting?

fox update: the first of the new vacuum pipes are in. we're vented to outside and have our first inlet for a hose. ignore the low voltage wire that hasn't been zip tied to the pipe yet. maybe i'll put it in 1/2" smurf tube, idk. the fnacy schedule 20 PVC is so annoying to deal with compared to regular old schedule 40 DWV pipe and sewer & drain pipe, especially cause of the need to cut it square and smooth. it wants to smoosh instead of cut, so the scissor or ratchet type cutters are right out. it smooshes in the rotary cutter but does eventually cut and return to round. but it's super smooth inside and along fittings compared to schedule 40 so i see the advantage.

fox update: not a whole lot of progress today, but i did pick up some polyiso foam board. if you encounter cardboard corners like these when opening boxes, save them and stick them in your truck next to the ratchet straps. my sheets of polyiso are majestically unmolested by tears and crush marks from being tied down. but i did get the new vacuum hung on the wall. now i can start running hard pipe through walls and behind things so i don't trip over long vacuum hoses. the old shopvac is then headed out to the shed to sit and wait for an ultra-rare wet mess. i brought in the coil of fiber and all the leftover 3/4" smurf tube. i don't know what past me was thinking by saving so many smol pieces but here we are. i'm gonna use schedule 40 PVC couplings on it instead of buying more PVC conduit couplings and you can't stop me. they won't UV degrade inside a wall and ceiling.

fox update: tore off the crusty old baseboard and cut out & put on the new ones. there was a little water damage to the drywall in there behind it cause it had gaps and never really sealed. the new ones are polystyrene and fully caulked on all sides so should be waterproof. also set up a blast gate and adapter for the semi-rigid dust collector spoot. they only make 2-1/2" blast gates but it fit alright on the outside of a 2" vac pipe. so far so good on operation no longer tripping over hoses.

fox update: first data conduit is in and populated with two cat6 and a pull string. unfortunately for the other two, the 3/4" smurf tube is buried way in the back of the shed of the shed and it's been unreasonably hot outside so i'm not sure how much i have left, i used a lot of it for an underground run for irrigation control. i may need to order a spool of 3/4" flex or do something goofy with whatever rigid PVC conduit i have lying around.

fox update: the last of the old cabinets are down, the walls are framed, and the corner is insulated. i've even got one piece of drywall up behind where the monitor is gonna go. there was way less mold than i expected behind the old cabinets, it seems the melamine coated MDF took most of the water damage. i kept the studs a little bit away from the corner so it could be entirely insulated at its thermally weakest point, and so that flex conduit could go around it. worst case scenario, my drywall mud will crack along that tape seam cause it's looser than your mom.

next step: data conduit. i'll use up all the leftover smurf tube before getting anything new, and run the fiber while the walls are open even though it may never get used. the box in the far corner behind the workbench is getting 2x ethernet to the server room, 2x USB to another box below the workbench, and one aux cable to the box behind the radio. i'll add another box somewhere along the left workbench for 2 more ethernet for testing/setting things up. and the box behind the radio is getting a coax from the distribution amp fed from my antennas. i'll need to make a coax to alligator clip thing so the fucker quits being all staticy. if at some point i do a handcam project stream, this is where it'll be. any suggestions for things to add before i go and do all the data conduit and start filling them up?
