Regarding the #Proton fiasco:

I don't know much one way or another about Fastmail's internal culture, but I can say with certainty that their product has been rock solid for so many years I can't even recall when I first started using them.

They seem to be the move-slow-and-fix-things company, which I greatly appreciate. Their UX has evolved very slowly over time…some might say too slowly, but I'm fine with it.

And they have EU data sovereignty as an option now!

Everyone will focus on the touchscreen aspect of things, but the thing I'm immediately jumping out of my chair about is the Dynamic Island.

I've always hated the notch. I never stopped hating it, first on iPhone and then on Mac laptops. I rejoiced when iPhone moved off of the notch design.

This is so-o-o much better! And yeah, the return of a glowing Apple logo is definitely awesome as well.

It's not a definition of perceived quality.

It's a definition of process.

Slop can be "high-quality" and it's still slop.

People who produce slop don't get out of deserved ridicule by saying "well this isn't slop, because it's good."

I actually think the entire idea of "phone notifications" is somewhat insane. Like, why do I even want that?? I don't, really.

He's right that AI is just more software, nothing special. He's wrong that because software exists we can use it. Just because there's a machine where you can prompt a feature and it "writes" a piece of software doesn't mean one should do so. And so on and so forth.

Anyone have any experience with pCloud? It seems rather impressive at first glance. iOS app is getting rave reviews. Might be able to run their client on Linux too.

I would love to know if the "consensus" at the Linux Maintainers Summit in any way reflects an actual consensus of everyone who somehow contributes to the Linux kernel broadly speaking.

I would also love to know how many Linux maintainers directly work at, say, Nvidia etc. Because I suspect a lot of folks might be shocked how much corporate capture Linux has now by the biggest of Big Tech.

I'm glad Marco Arment and John Gruber and Federico Viticci are having fun talking about their little techie models on the platform run by Elon M. while he's presently waging a war against Ukraine and possibly turning the tide so that Eastern Europe gets crushed by Putin's Russia.

These techie men definitely have their priorities straight! Having positive techie fun! 😃👍

I don't want any "smart" anything. I'm quite happy with dumb appliances which just do their job and work year in and year out.

In other words, y'all ain't gonna hack into my toilet! Or my coffee grinder! Or my, um, fridge! 😂
