So what ought people to do? Shackle themselves to the first one who catches their eye? Give up the whole world for her, never look at another living soul? What is that, some kind of chivalry? Wear the same suit of clothes from adolescence onwards, cut yourself off from all other changes and fashions in tailoring? Only fools are faithful. The Earth is full of pretty women, and just because one of them happens to be first, that's no reason to ignore the others. It's wrong to have favourites. Beauty snares me, wherever I find it, chains of roses, and I submit, I let it happen. I devote myself to them, one at a time, exclusively - but that doesn't stop me looking at what else is on offer. What are eyes for? I see their good points, the gifts Nature's given them - and pay them the compliment of appreciating them. My heart was made to love everything that's lovable - and when a pretty face demands that heart, I give it gladly. If I'd ten thousand hearts, I'd give them all. No pleasure on Earth can equal the first stirrings of passion, every single time, and the best thing about an affair is that it doesn't last. It's a siege, a military campaign, and that's the fun of it.
You see a pretty girl, you start your manoeuvres... Every day a small advance... She's shy, she's inexperienced, she offers you such pretty resistance, such sweet little ploys, defences, and you find a thousand ways - tears, declarations, sighs - to make her learn to trust you. Gradually, gently, you make her forget the lessons she learned at her mother's knee... Slowly, patiently, you lead her just where you want her. But after that, what's left? What have you to say to her, or she to you? The battle's won. "True and lasting love' is a quicksand, and if we fall into it, we die. Instead, some other sweet little creature happens along and the whole thing starts again. Conquering beauty is like conquering anything else - and what general was ever satisfied with a single triumph? I'm like Alexander the Great: I love the whole world, I want it, and when I've won it, I'll fall on my knees and beg new worlds to conquer.
